Reviving Small Habits: My Journey to Improvement and Growth

Chapter 1: Recognizing the Decline

I noticed a significant slowdown in my follower growth and a sharp drop in my views. The 30 pounds I had successfully shed returned, and my photographs began to feel more like random snapshots than intentional captures. My audition success rate plummeted, with only one voice job booked for every hundred auditions.

This situation starkly contrasted the progress I had made just a year earlier. Last summer, I had embraced the principles laid out in two influential books on small habits: Atomic Habits by James Clear and Mini Habits by Stephen Guise. Adopting these new routines transformed me into a Top Writer, helped me lose weight, and led to my first sales of photo prints. I even secured seven consecutive audiobook narration projects.

However, soon after, everything began to unravel. I couldn't identify any changes in my habits; I adhered to my daily routines, wrote consistently, exercised regularly, and took my camera out almost every day. Yet, I felt stagnant.

In my search for answers, I revisited the books, aiming to pinpoint where I had gone astray. I realized I had become disconnected from the work I was doing. While I had set up effective routines for my habits, I had begun to coast once the actions became second nature. I erroneously believed that simply performing these tasks regularly equated to improvement.

For instance, I thought that consistently writing and posting articles meant I was honing my craft. Consequently, I started producing pieces without reflecting on how to enhance them, often neglecting the opportunity for a second draft. My focus shifted toward quantity rather than quality.

The same pattern emerged in my exercise routine. After finding the right workouts for myself, my priority became completing them as quickly as possible, resulting in a lack of mindfulness and poor form. I often struggled to recall what I had accomplished the previous day.

In photography, I stopped pushing my boundaries. I ceased experimenting and became complacent with my established skills.

To address these challenges, I implemented several changes.

First, I decided to slow down and release the pressure to post daily. I began dedicating more time to each article, allowing my "final draft" to rest for an additional day or two, which led to more thorough edits.

Additionally, I adopted a learning mindset, actively seeking tips to enhance my writing. I recognized that my work had lost its personal touch, making it harder for readers to connect. While I didn't need to overshare, I realized I needed to infuse more emotion into my edits.

For my voice work, I recognized the need for deeper engagement. I aimed to listen to others' performances daily, analyzing their techniques, and revisiting my audition scripts to practice with various acting choices.
