Embracing Authenticity: Discover What It Means to Show Up Fully

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Authenticity

Recently, I delved into the insightful works of Veronika Hlebova during my journey of self-improvement. After immersing myself in her book "Separation: How To Stop Being Dependent On Other People," I followed her Telegram posts and enrolled in her online course. Veronika's teachings have profoundly impacted my life.

With her consent, I would like to share some of her most resonant ideas, beginning with her perspective on what it truly means to show up fully as our authentic selves.

Section 1.1: Defining Authentic Presence

What does it mean to be fully present and authentic? It involves engaging wholeheartedly, being mindful in our relationships, and embracing our entire selves. This includes acknowledging our needs without shame, honoring our feelings as integral to our interactions, and valuing our choices as significant. It also requires recognizing our desires and aspirations while identifying areas for personal growth.

One of the main challenges we face are the self-limiting beliefs we harbor, such as the notion that “there is no ‘I’ in team.” Our upbringing often emphasizes empathy, sharing, and prioritizing the needs of others over our own, which complicates our ability to connect authentically.

Fear, shame, and guilt often hinder us from fully expressing ourselves. Vulnerability can seem daunting due to the risk of criticism. By shutting ourselves off, we may think we are protecting ourselves, but this leads to greater suffering. To feel valued and respected by ourselves and others, we must embrace our true selves.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Courage to Be Authentic

So, how can we cultivate the bravery to express our authenticity? It’s essential to remember a few fundamental rights we often overlook. Acknowledging and believing in these rights can guide us toward a more authentic existence:

  1. The Right to Make Mistakes: Embracing imperfection is vital. Many parts of ourselves may have been rejected by parents or teachers, causing us to struggle with self-acceptance. Learning to allow ourselves to make mistakes paves the way for new experiences without the weight of self-criticism.
  2. The Right to Prioritize Ourselves: We often receive unsolicited advice about how to behave in various roles—be it as a parent, professional, or partner. Understanding that we have the right to respect our own experiences and make decisions that serve us first is crucial.
  3. The Right to Disagree: It’s impossible to please everyone. When faced with criticism, especially on social media, it’s easy to feel compelled to defend ourselves. However, accepting that it’s okay not to be liked by everyone allows us to maintain our boundaries and stay true to ourselves.

Embracing these principles does not equate to neglecting others or refusing to grow; rather, it’s about reclaiming our power. By permitting ourselves to make mistakes, prioritize our needs, and disregard the opinions of others, we take ownership of our lives.

Section 1.2: The Joy of Authentic Living

What does it feel like to be completely authentic? You find excitement in new ventures—be it a blog, career change, or relationship. You communicate your feelings, needs, and desires openly and confidently. You trust your capacity to navigate challenges and take accountability for your actions without fear of judgment.

Understanding that your actions have consequences allows you to embrace responsibility without self-reproach. When facing criticism, you can discern who is accountable for what, enabling healthier relationships where boundaries are respected.

By deciding who can provide feedback, you reinforce your self-identity and protect it from external influences. You gain the ability to choose how much you contribute to others and can disengage from projects that no longer fulfill you, even if others depend on you.

Experiencing the freedom of being your true self brings joy, excitement, and fulfillment—motivating you to live authentically.
