Chapter 1: The Medium Dilemma

Recently, I have encountered numerous articles with alarming titles like:

“Medium is no longer worth my time”

“My views are plummeting inexplicably”

“The Medium algorithm has worsened”

“Farewell, Medium; you’re not worth it anymore”

For the past three to four months, I shared the sentiments of these authors—feeling frustrated, perplexed, disheartened, and anxious. I often pondered whether I should continue publishing on Medium when my content seemed to go unread or if I should explore other platforms.

These reflections were entirely valid. Witnessing my monthly views drop from over 70,000 to around 3,000 felt like a severe blow. Initially, I questioned if my content had diminished in quality. I dedicated time to creating exceptional articles, yet the results remained disheartening. “Am I facing a shadowban, or is there another explanation?” I wondered.

Then I noticed numerous articles by novice writers with fewer than 200 followers receiving over 3,000 claps from 500 readers. This prompted a memory of something I had heard when I embarked on my Medium journey in May 2022: “Medium tends to favor new authors to encourage them to keep writing.” I recall experiencing that surge of engagement when I was new—views skyrocketed, readers were engaged, and my earnings exceeded $1,500 monthly. As a newcomer, it was exhilarating.

However, I’ve also observed veteran writers achieving over 100,000 views monthly alongside others with a collection of successful articles. Remarkably, my own articles have seen a resurgence in readership over the past week.

Therefore, it seems evident that Medium does not exclusively favor new authors. While the cause remains elusive, I believe we might be witnessing a positive shift. For any long-time writers contemplating leaving Medium, I encourage you to hang in there a little longer. With the collective support of our vibrant community, I am confident we can reclaim our previous success or at least significantly enhance our current standing.

This month, my earnings have already surpassed my total from January, and I’m eager to see what the upcoming months will bring. The decline on Medium appears to have hit rock bottom and is on the rise again—so keep writing!
