Recent observations have shed light on the behavior of iPhones when they run out of battery. Even in a state of shutdown, these devices retain some functionality, a feature that researchers suggest could be exploited.

When an iPhone's battery is fully depleted or turned off, it doesn't completely shut down. Certain critical components shift into a low-power mode, enabling functions such as Find My, contactless payment, car ignition, and home unlocking for a limited duration. However, a study conducted by academics at Germany’s Technical University of Darmstadt has proposed a theoretical vulnerability that could potentially allow for hacking under these conditions.

It's important to note that iPhones operate with two distinct low-power modes. The first is hardware-based, while the second is the iOS software low-power mode, which activates when the battery dips below 20%, extending the phone's usability.

This hardware low-power mode has been present in several iPhone models, including the XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, and the latest SE models since the introduction of iOS 15. It permits only a limited range of functionalities, primarily utilizing Near-Field Communication (NFC), ultra-wideband, and Bluetooth technologies. This design ensures that users relying on their iPhones as digital wallets, student IDs, vehicle keys, or hotel keys are not left stranded in case of a battery failure. Additionally, the Find My feature remains operational for a few hours, providing a safety net if the device is misplaced.

Unfortunately, this represents a hardware flaw similar to the Spectre vulnerability discovered years ago, which cannot be remedied through simple software updates. This flaw is expected to persist in existing iPhones and could potentially affect future models unless Apple revises the implementation of low-power mode.

Despite these concerns, there is no immediate cause for alarm. Such vulnerabilities tend to be exploited by state actors aiming at specific targets rather than the general public. Currently, hackers would require physical access to an iPhone and would need to jailbreak the device to introduce malicious software onto the processors still operating in low-power mode. Only then could they track the device when it is turned off or disable features like Find My to facilitate theft. In contrast, most users remain more susceptible to basic phishing schemes involving fake communications, emails, websites, and even deceptive QR codes masquerading as legitimate communications from banks or service providers.

While there are measures one can take to guard against phishing scams, achieving complete security is nearly impossible. Despite over a decade of writing about cybersecurity, I recently fell victim to a phishing SMS and had to change my credit card as a precaution.

These incidents will continue to make headlines, particularly as new features introduce fresh opportunities for cybercriminals. Overall, while features like low-power mode offer significant benefits to users, they also come with inherent risks.
