Three Effective Strategies to Earn Respect at Work and in Life
Written on
Understanding Respect
What does respect truly mean? It can be straightforward to identify when respect is absent, just as it is to recognize disrespect. By definition, respect involves showing “high regard” or special consideration for someone or something.
In my years in the corporate world, I have witnessed numerous new managers struggle to gain the respect of their teams. Despite their best efforts, many ultimately failed because they tried too hard to win over their staff.
Respect is best understood through both social and individual lenses. From a young age, we learn fundamental social norms about respect, like playing nicely, sharing, and expressing gratitude.
Our personal interpretations of respect are shaped by various factors, including our personalities, feelings, preferences, and cultural backgrounds. Defining these concepts clearly and objectively can often be quite challenging.
A quick online search for “respect” yields countless articles and opinions. In light of this, I’d like to share my insights on how to foster respect from others.
Staying Composed Amidst Provocation
One of the most impactful messages we can convey is staying calm, even in stressful situations. Approaching challenging or potentially volatile circumstances with a steady demeanor helps others manage their own anxieties and often diffuses tension.
Maintaining Eye Contact
Another crucial aspect of nonverbal communication is eye contact. Sustaining eye contact during conversations conveys friendliness and shows the other person that you value their input.
When engaging in conversation, give your full attention to the person speaking. Consider how it feels when someone you're talking to seems distracted, whether by their phone or other thoughts. Make an effort to maintain eye contact and provide verbal or nonverbal feedback to show you’re engaged.
In conclusion, remember that earning respect is reciprocal; it always requires giving respect in return.
