Finding Your Writing Niche: The Balance Between Focus and Variety

Chapter 1: The Quest for a Niche
During a recent phone interview for a part-time writing position, I was prompted to share my professional journey. Taking a moment to gather my thoughts, I began recounting the wide array of roles I’ve embraced throughout my career.
“After obtaining my master’s degree in journalism, I started by crafting news articles before stepping into the role of managing editor for a travel magazine,” I explained. “Following years of globe-trotting and penning my travel experiences while overseeing the magazine's editorial tasks, I have engaged in a variety of writing ventures, from crafting website content and press releases to managing social media for businesses.”
As I elaborated, I also touched on my personal writing endeavors, which included pieces on Medium, a newsletter I run on Substack, a published poetry collection, and three children's books tackling challenging subjects. Listening to myself recount these experiences was somewhat tiring, prompting me to refocus.
This led me to omit details such as assisting students with their college applications, ghostwriting books, and composing lyrics for a local band. I felt it was crucial to streamline my narrative and emphasize my core skills.
“While I undertake various freelance projects, I want to highlight my primary strengths,” I stated, bringing my lengthy monologue to a close. “I excel as both a writer and an editor.”
This seemed to resonate with her, and it was indeed accurate. Although I handle social media, create marketing content, and provide academic support, my true talents lie in writing and editing. By narrowing my focus, I believe she could better envision my fit within the organization.
Section 1.1: The Challenge of Juggling Many Roles
Reflecting on that conversation, I began to question whether my lack of significant financial success as a freelancer stemmed from my diverse array of roles. For many years, my freelance work was supplementary, as I was a stay-at-home mom. However, now that I am a single mother without child support, it's time to recalibrate my focus.
Despite the positive outcome of the interview, where I anticipate receiving regular writing assignments, I plan to adjust my approach going forward. Instead of listing my myriad skills—including poetry, lyrics, and technical research—I intend to spotlight my strengths in writing and editing. I believe this will enhance my earning potential, as potential employers will be able to picture me in specific roles more clearly.
Although I take pride in my varied experiences, I now feel that many of these details are better suited for casual conversation rather than professional introductions. At least I managed to avoid mentioning my experience with obituaries and my return to journalism through daily news articles on NewsBreak.
Subsection 1.1.1: Seeking Insights
I’m eager to hear about others’ experiences. Have you found greater success by honing in on a niche within your field? On platforms like Medium, do writers who concentrate on specific themes, such as humor or mental health, cultivate a more dedicated following that knows what to anticipate?
Please share your thoughts, insights, and advice in the comments; I am keen to learn more each day, particularly regarding how to make a sustainable living!
