# Remarkable Discovery: Ancient Serpent Head Unearthed in Mexico

Written on

Chapter 1: The Earthquake's Unexpected Revelation

In September 2022, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the western coast of Mexico. While the disaster caused significant destruction, it also uncovered an astonishing archaeological find. Beneath one damaged building, researchers discovered a large serpent head.

Archaeological findings can arise from systematic digs or unexpected events. Notably, even young individuals can stumble upon significant artifacts, as illustrated by the tale of a child who found a silver Roman coin in a sandbox.

Section 1.1: Serpent Sculpture and Natural Phenomena

Extreme natural events can sometimes facilitate archaeological discoveries, reminiscent of recent droughts in Italy, Spain, and Iraq that unveiled ancient structures. In this instance, however, it was an earthquake that led to a significant find. On September 19, 2022, the quake caused two fatalities, numerous injuries, and widespread property damage, affecting areas up to 400 kilometers from the epicenter, including Mexico City.

Amid the destruction, a school building's foundation was exposed, revealing a fascinating object that piqued local interest: a large serpent head, vibrantly painted in various hues. This artifact was subsequently examined by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), an organization dedicated to exploring the archaeological heritage of ancient Central American civilizations.

Subsection 1.1.1: Worship of Aztec Deities

Researchers identified the serpent head as an Aztec creation, likely dating back over 500 years. This discovery dates back to the peak of Tenochtitlán's prosperity, a city that was home to more than 200,000 residents at the start of the 16th century, making it one of the largest cities of its time. The fall of this great city occurred in 1521 when Spanish conquistadors overthrew it after a series of intense battles.

INAH researchers highlighted the Aztecs' deep reverence for their deities, constructing pyramids and temples in their honor. Their spiritual beliefs often embraced zoomorphism, with gods frequently depicted as animals. One of the most revered deities across Mesoamerica was Quetzalcoatl, known as the "Feathered Serpent," who was commonly represented in serpent form.

Quetzalcoatl was worshipped by various cultures, including the Toltecs, Chichimecs, Tepanecs, inhabitants of Teotihuacán, and even some Mayans, who called him Kukulkan. In Mexico City, there existed a significant temple dedicated to Quetzalcoatl, which was among the most important Aztec religious sites and the third-largest structure in the city after the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

Section 1.2: Unique Features of the Serpent Head

The newly unearthed stone serpent measures nearly 2 meters in length, 0.85 meters in width, and stands 1 meter tall, weighing an impressive 1.3 tons. It retains much of its original coloring, showcasing red, blue, black, and white pigments that have survived on about 80% of its surface.

Researchers acknowledge that while other serpent sculptures have been uncovered in Tenochtitlán, this particular one is remarkable due to its preserved colors. However, scientists remain uncertain whether this figure definitively represents Quetzalcoatl. Conservation efforts are set to continue until 2024, primarily focusing on moisture removal and protecting the sculpture's exterior.

“Thanks to the dedicated work of conservators led by Maria Barajas, this sculpture has been preserved remarkably well. This find is vital as it enhances our understanding of Mesoamerican art prior to the Spanish conquest, offering a fresh perspective,” shared Robles Cortés in an interview with Live Science, an INAH representative.

Chapter 2: The Myth of Atlantis and Its Possible Origins

The narrative of Atlantis, a legendary lost land, has captivated scholars for centuries. Although it remains an enigma, some believe its tale may have roots in real historical catastrophes.
