Finding Freedom: My Two-Year Journey of Sobriety

Chapter 1: The Road to Sobriety
Overcoming the urge to drink can be incredibly challenging. I consider myself fortunate for a couple of reasons. Firstly, my battle with alcohol was somewhat mitigated by my struggle to taper off Valium. The focus on overcoming that hurdle made it easier to avoid alcohol. Secondly, my descent into alcohol dependency escalated rapidly and unexpectedly.
Initially, I turned to alcohol to cope with the difficulties of reducing my Valium intake, a combination that spiraled into a dangerous cycle. I found myself trapped in a loop where drinking became essential to manage daily life, while simultaneously exacerbating my anxiety and depression. The situation was a nightmare, both mentally and physically.
When I entered detox, I had no clear expectations. I anticipated a tough road ahead, but surprisingly, the challenge of abstaining from alcohol itself was not as daunting as I had imagined. The real struggle stemmed from the withdrawal symptoms of Valium. However, I recognized that undergoing detox was a vital step toward reclaiming my life.
Often, when you’re in the grips of addiction, you believe that a sober life will be dull and unfulfilling. In reality, the opposite has been true for me.
Since I embraced sobriety, the temptation to drink has vanished entirely. To me, alcohol represents death itself. In fact, the only two occasions I drank post-detox were during moments when I contemplated ending my life, driven by the torment of Valium withdrawal. I felt trapped with no foreseeable future, unable to exist in the present. Fortunately, I found a compassionate doctor who guided me through a careful tapering process, which I am still navigating.
Today, I have no cravings for alcohol and feel no temptation; it is simply not an option for me. A wise person once told me that "the cost of freedom is eternal vigilance." They suggested that I would always need to be cautious to avoid slipping back into drinking. However, I disagree. Once you experience true freedom, the desire to return to that former enslavement disappears. Why would anyone want to go back?
