Embracing Your Inner Strength: Reclaiming Power from Narcissists

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Narcissism

In our society, we all exhibit some narcissistic traits; however, the degree to which we accept them varies. Those who feel guilty about prioritizing their own needs often find themselves vulnerable, becoming easy targets for those who exploit others. This is an unfortunate reality of life.

“Embrace your inner strength.”

  • Dr. Gregory House, House

The plethora of advice on spotting narcissists often shifts the focus away from empowering the victim. Instead, it burdens individuals with the responsibility of identifying red flags that can be found in nearly everyone.

If you genuinely want to steer clear of narcissists entirely, you might as well consider living underground for the rest of your life!

We all have tendencies that can be considered narcissistic. Some embrace this aspect of themselves more than others. Those who constantly feel guilty about their needs will always be the ones sacrificed, left prey for emotional vampires.

Recently, a male acquaintance of my cousin sought my permission to get to know me. I candidly told him I had narcissistic traits and a challenging attitude, suggesting he should look elsewhere for companionship. I prefer to keep my distance from men, as I find them rather unappealing.

My indifference towards men stems from a deep understanding of their nature. I believe that many men exhibit narcissistic behaviors, and I have come to accept them for who they are. I refuse to engage in debates about the respect and care they owe to women, as it has become evident that many are indifferent. The only women attracted to such men seem to be those who are willing to ignore logic for fleeting affection.

Conversely, narcissists often prioritize their own well-being, and this self-preservation instinct is something I acknowledge in myself.

To effectively handle narcissists, it’s essential to become an energetic match for them, which means fully embracing your inner strength.

The first step is recognizing that anyone, yes, anyone, has the potential to hurt or exploit you, regardless of their outward kindness. Childhood teachings often divided humanity into simplistic categories of good and evil, influenced by the stories we grew up with. Now that we are adults, it's time to unlearn these notions. The idea of good and bad is not so black and white; individuals can either harm or help you based on your perspective.

Let’s stop perpetuating the myth that “bad things happen to good people.” In truth, unfortunate events occur to everyone, and sometimes, those labeled as “good” can make foolish decisions.

Who told you that you were a good person? Is it because you wish the best for others? Or because you think love will heal those who continuously misuse your kindness? Did a divine entity inform you that the righteous must endure suffering?

As a woman, I can assert that some of the most abusive men I’ve encountered genuinely believed they were good. This has led me to realize that goodness is subjective, shaped by individual perceptions. I may be seen as a monster by some, even when I’ve strived to do right by them. Morality, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I’ve chosen to stop chasing an unrealistic standard of goodness and instead live by my own code.

So, just because you consider yourself a good person, does that mean you deserve everything you wish for? Absolutely not!

Let me break it to you: a kind heart doesn’t guarantee a smooth path in life. Performing good deeds, such as helping the less fortunate or caring for the planet, doesn't automatically label you as a good person. You’ve merely engaged in acts of kindness.

We inhabit a harsh world that doesn’t show mercy. Nature isn’t here to indulge your fantasies; it thrives on decay and destruction. It’s time to abandon the idealistic clouds and face reality.

This isn’t to discourage you from acting according to your values, but don’t expect gratitude or rewards for your efforts.

Narcissists are adept at identifying their targets—don’t let yourself become one ever again. Life will continue to drain you until you reclaim your power.
