Courage to Stand Up for Your Beliefs and Ambitions

Chapter 1: The Importance of Fighting for What You Believe In
Navigating life's challenges often demands a blend of resilience, flexibility, and the encouragement of those around you. It's essential to have faith in your own abilities. Through my own experiences, I can attest to the necessity of fighting for what matters.
Fighting doesn’t imply physical confrontations; rather, it encompasses standing up for your rights, aspirations, or objectives. This can manifest in various ways, such as opposing injustice, pursuing your ambitions, asserting your beliefs in the face of family pressure, advocating for your needs, battling illness, or breaking free from negative habits.
We can take cues from young children, who pursue their desires with unwavering determination, often persuading their parents to fulfill their wishes.
Allow me to recount a childhood episode: While playing on swings with a senior student, the daughter of my teacher, she fell and began to cry. I was on another swing at the time, and when a teacher instructed me to apologize, I explained that I was not responsible for her fall. Despite my insistence that I had done nothing wrong, the teacher punished me by making me stand in the playground until I said sorry. Nevertheless, I remained resolute and chose not to apologize, as I refused to condone unfair treatment. Eventually, others recognized my stand against injustice.
In 1974, at the age of ten, I found myself fighting against issues like corruption and unemployment. I documented this experience in an article on Medium titled, Fearless at Ten: My Journey Through the 1974 Bihar Movement.
Throughout my life, I have consistently advocated for myself. From a young age, I have always pursued what I wanted. For instance, I opted for an Arts degree over science, despite external expectations. After getting married and having a child, I made the decision to return to school and pursue a master’s in music, initially without support. Eventually, my family came around to back me. Starting my career was yet another challenge, but I take pride in the path I have carved for myself.
The key takeaway is that to realize your dreams and aspirations, you must be willing to advocate for yourself. No one will simply hand you what you seek; you must be prepared to fight for it. Initially, people may not comprehend your choices, but often, support will follow once you take that first step.
Conversely, yielding to others’ demands can lead to regret. For instance, if you feel strongly against studying science or medicine but are pressured by your parents, it’s crucial to assert your stance. The same applies to marriage—sometimes, we acquiesce to pressures for the sake of temporary comfort, but such decisions often do not yield lasting happiness. Although some situations can be rectified later, others cannot.
In summary, advocating for what is just and pursuing your objectives consistently yields positive outcomes.
