Avoid Dehumanizing Language: A Call for Thoughtful Writing

Written on

Understanding Dehumanization in Writing

It's crucial to examine the words we choose when we write, as they can significantly affect how our audience perceives our message. Recently, I had a moment of clarity regarding my writing choices, and I want to share this with you to help prevent similar missteps.

TRIGGER WARNING: This piece contains explicit references to dehumanizing language. Readers who may find this upsetting are advised to proceed with caution.

The word that caught my attention? “The.” This seemingly harmless term can strip away individual identities when used to generalize groups, leaving them feeling lost and disconnected from their purpose.

I became aware of this issue after encountering a Tweet from APStylebook, a trusted source on writing etiquette:

My realization hit home when I reflected on a recent article I wrote titled The Real Reason the French Are Striking Once More. I intended to be descriptive, but instead, I ended up reinforcing stereotypes about both the French and their motivations.

My oversight prompted me to reevaluate my other writings, where I discovered numerous similar errors. Terms like “The Rules,” “The Publisher,” and “The West” populated my headlines, and regrettably, I found the dehumanizing word throughout my articles as well.

I sincerely regret these lapses in judgment.

Recognizing my mistakes, I pledge to be more considerate moving forward and to avoid using the word "the" in a way that could dehumanize individuals or groups. I extend my apologies to anyone I may have offended, including:

  • Individuals of limited financial means
  • Those living with mental health challenges
  • People of French descent
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • College graduates

If your group was not explicitly mentioned but has been affected by my careless language, please know that I am equally remorseful.

Let’s strive to create a more thoughtful dialogue in our writing.
