Unlocking Your Potential: The Journey of Online Writing

Chapter 1: Embracing the Challenge of Online Writing
"Hey! Stop putting it off and just share your story!"
That's the mantra I keep repeating to myself. But what if no one reads it? Or worse, what if they do and don't enjoy it? Well, too bad. It's time to hit publish and find out. So here we go...
What’s all the buzz around "online writing"? Honestly, I’m not entirely sure, but I’m about to find out, so join me on this intriguing journey!
Currently, I'm at a point in my life where I'm exploring alternative income streams, with a primary focus on flexibility. The ability to work from anywhere, at any time, is what draws me to online writing. While I’m uncertain about where to start, my research suggests that platforms like Medium could be a promising avenue.
Additionally, I gain inspiration from successful figures like Nicolas Cole, Dickie Bush, and Ali Abdaal. Each has invested significant time and effort to achieve financial independence and has generously shared their insights and experiences with anyone eager to learn.
However, I recognize that there's no quick fix to wealth — it’s going to require hard work, commitment, and the resilience to navigate the highs and lows if I want to thrive in online writing.
So, what topics am I passionate about that might resonate with readers? That’s a crucial question I need to tackle.
Many sources emphasize the importance of "finding your niche," but how do you even begin that process? I’m still figuring that out, but to lay the groundwork, here are a few subjects I’m enthusiastic about and would love to write about:
- Martial Arts
I've dabbled in various martial arts over the years, though I haven’t committed long enough to attain the coveted Black Belt. My fascination with martial arts spans their connections to health, mindfulness, and personal defense.
I've trained in Aikido, known for its non-aggressive approach, as well as Budo-Jitsu, Tae-Kwon-Do, and Military Unarmed Combat. My interest particularly lies in the Japanese martial arts, which embody a rich culture of respect and honor among practitioners.
I'm also intrigued by practical self-defense systems like Krav Maga and Tony Blauer's SPEAR system, which focuses on utilizing innate human defense mechanisms to enhance survival chances — fascinating, right?
I could write volumes on this subject, but I’ll pause for now.
- Music
My journey with music began years ago when I picked up the drums (not particularly well, I must admit). It all started in a high school music class where I struggled to keep a simple beat, which frustrated me enough to practice at home.
Eventually, I could keep up with songs on the radio and even bought my first drum kit during my second year in the Army. Over the years, I switched kits, but my love for music remained. In 2016, I transitioned to an electronic drum kit, allowing me to play without disturbing my neighbors.
I’ve also explored guitar, first acquiring an acoustic and electric one after leaving the Army. With limited online resources back then, I struggled to improve. However, this year, I reignited my passion through guitar lessons and invested in a Fender Telecaster, making the experience more enjoyable.
I’m now diving into music theory and have developed a fascination for effects pedals. My dream is to one day play all instruments in a song myself, and I’m experimenting with a looper to achieve that.
- Technology
I admit it; I have a bit of a tech obsession, though it varies from one gadget to another. For example, when we moved into our current home, I became determined to transform it into a smart home, diving deep into research.
My setup is primarily Apple-based, utilizing HomePod and Apple TV as hubs. While I have some success with automation, my experience with Siri has been hit or miss. My wife often jokes that Siri only responds to me, leading to amusing theories about her loyalty.
There’s so much more I could say about technology, but for now, I’ll keep it brief.
It seems I've written more than I anticipated, which I suppose is a good sign. I intended to discuss additional interests but decided to keep this initial article concise, hopefully leaving readers eager for more. Other topics I’m passionate about include:
- Gym Workouts
- Cars & 4WDs
- Travel Hacks & Gadgets
- Fashion (though I’m no expert, I do have my phases)
So, do any of these subjects pique your interest? I’m not sure, but we all have to start somewhere, right?
If you've made it this far, you’re my new hero! Please let me know your thoughts. Feel free to comment on any of these topics or suggest what you’d like to hear more about. Thank you!
Dan
p.s. How great is the Reacher series on Amazon Prime? I'm not talking about the Tom Cruise movies, but the Alan Ritchson version. Season 1 was thrilling, and I can't wait for Season 2 to drop in mid-December — super excited! Just a random thought, but that’s how I roll. Peace.
