I envisioned a future where I would finally feel "enough," with each completed task being a stepping stone toward that elusive state of fulfillment. Yet, the only destination I reached was sheer exhaustion.

This was the kind of exhaustion that led me to organize my sock drawer alphabetically just to feel a sense of achievement. It turns out that the persistent low-grade anxiety, driven by an unending urge to "do more and be more," is far from a formula for tranquility—it acts more like a wrecking ball.

In our daily lives, this background hum of chronic anxiety subtly yet significantly impacts our Return On Time (ROT). This pervasive feeling, often detached from any real threat, slowly unravels the very fabric of our lives, leading to sleepless nights, uneasy stomachs, and unending worry. We often fill our days with busyness as a distraction from an underlying sense of suffering—suffering that we may not even recognize.

It’s similar to always being on guard for a predator that never actually appears. This constant state of alertness erodes our mental and physical well-being, wasting our valuable moments in a fog of worry. Even minor discomforts, such as low-level anxiety or boredom, can contribute to this state. We live in a culture rife with anxiety, even in the absence of real dangers. We remain tense, fists clenched, perpetually bracing for the unknown—be it the fear of death, uncertain future events, or the endless waiting.

The concerning aspect is that many of our anxieties lack identifiable triggers. We often feel anxious without any discernible reason. This state of anxiety has become ingrained in our identities. Living in such a manner detrimentally affects not just ourselves but also those who choose to accompany us on our journey.

Being in a constant state of anxiety severely diminishes the quality of life. It’s akin to perpetually fleeing from an imaginary tiger that never appears. This ongoing stress wreaks havoc on our physical, mental, and emotional health, leading to a range of issues:

Imagine the strain of living with such tension—perpetually scanning the horizon for an unseen threat, with your stomach churning like a washing machine full of rocks. All of this is fueled by an internal belief that a tiger of existential dread is lurking nearby (even though the closest jungle may just be your neighbor's unruly garden).

The most troubling realization? This anxiety became a part of who I am—perhaps it has for you as well.
