The Most Misguided PR Advice Ever Received

Chapter 1: The Pitfalls of Poor Advice
In our lives, we often encounter individuals who offer misguided counsel. This phenomenon spans across all areas of society, with many eager to share their flawed insights. Surprisingly, while some give this advice for free, others manage to charge hefty fees for it.
Years ago, during my early foray into public relations, I encountered one such individual. She was an instructor in a PR course I attended as a novice. In this class, we were allegedly taught the fundamentals of crafting press releases and similar materials.
During a session focused on press releases, our teacher asserted with conviction that certain details should be omitted because it was a journalist's responsibility to uncover them. We were instructed not to do the journalist's job.
This assertion struck me as quite odd. To this day, I believe it's the most misguided piece of advice I've ever received in the realm of PR, and I've heard plenty over the years.
Let me clarify why this reasoning is fundamentally flawed. The primary objective of a communications professional in such scenarios is to secure favorable coverage for their client. Achieving this requires a journalist to publish or air our narrative. By simplifying the journalist's task, we enhance the chances of our story being picked up. Conversely, withholding information only increases their workload, making it less likely that our story will gain traction and, ultimately, that we will receive positive attention. One would think this is self-evident, but apparently, it is not.
Now, you may think I'm overreacting, but I believe that a competent PR professional should strive to amplify their client's opportunities for excellent exposure.
The advice given was merely a flimsy excuse for laziness. A new generation of communications professionals actually paid real money to be taught this misguided principle.
