When you’ve tried multiple time management techniques, it’s common to reach a point where it feels overwhelming, even if it initially seemed promising. You might feel like you’re trying to balance too many responsibilities at once, and the very plan meant to help you can start to feel burdensome.
The Pitfalls of Traditional Time Management
Often, when we think about time management, we envision a meticulously organized calendar, obligatory to-do lists, alarms, and a constant struggle against distractions. While there are only 24 hours in a day, we can learn to use that time more effectively.
Time management enthusiasts may suggest a rigid division of your day into three segments: eight hours for sleep, eight for work, and eight for personal activities like exercising, dining, and spending time with loved ones. However, this simplistic view fails to account for the realities of our lives.
For instance, the quality of your sleep may hinge on your dog needing to go outside, late-night meals, or even a hangover. Work hours can vary greatly based on meetings, the creative flow of your work, or unexpected challenges. The remaining hours for personal activities often don’t add up as neatly as suggested. Cooking and commuting can consume much more time than anticipated.
This unpredictability can become even more complex when you add in family, pets, or running a business.
Why Overwhelm Becomes the Norm
As you age, life tends to grow more complicated. You may find yourself juggling various responsibilities, from demanding jobs to family duties, social obligations, and financial concerns.
Without a clear strategy, many people keep all this information in their heads, promising themselves they’ll remember it when needed. Often, this leads to an overwhelming accumulation of thoughts and tasks, resulting in stress and anxiety.
