Living Intentionally: Insights from the Bhagavad Gita

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Bhagavad Gita

In my recent explorations of the Bhagavad Gita, I’ve come to appreciate its profound philosophical insights, which offer a wealth of wisdom from a singular source. The Bhagavad Gita, which translates from Sanskrit as "Song of God," is a concise yet impactful section of the Mahabharata, an epic that recounts a war in Kurukshetra, India, circa 3000 B.C. This text features a dialogue between Arjuna, a warrior, and Krishna, his divine charioteer. Their exchange touches on critical themes such as righteousness (dharma), devotion, and the essence of reality.

One of the key teachings emphasizes performing one’s duties without being preoccupied by the outcomes. This viewpoint stands in stark contrast to contemporary Western ideologies that often prioritize results in both personal and professional realms.

The Gita encourages us to take action and fulfill our responsibilities to the best of our abilities, regardless of personal passion or immediate meaning, while maintaining a detachment from the results of those efforts. This philosophy, though initially foreign to me, captivates my interest.

Why is this so compelling?

When we become fixated on outcomes, life risks becoming a transactional experience, akin to a barter system or a mechanical operation. This mindset can diminish our essence, rendering our existence robotic. I believe that this approach limits our capacity for genuine living.

When we commit to personal growth and recognize the fleeting nature of life, the importance of future results becomes less significant. We start to prioritize the present moment.

Causality and its implications are central to Eastern thought. Each action represents a choice—a decision towards the person we wish to become. The resulting effects emerge from our actions. If we act virtuously, we can release ourselves from excessive anxiety regarding outcomes.

In our lives, we assume various roles, akin to wearing different garments. These may include professional titles and personal relationships (friends, siblings, parents, etc.). When engaging in these roles, it is beneficial to devote our full attention to the task at hand.

This approach can mitigate the perpetual quest for passion and meaning in life, as embracing each moment passionately becomes the new norm. Thus, the joy of living can permeate every aspect of our existence. Every action we take transforms into an expression of our joy, enabling us to live in greater harmony with ourselves while potentially alleviating unnecessary suffering caused by distracted thoughts.

With love,

Anand
