Giving Space for Life-Changing Decisions: An Essential Guide

Chapter 1: The Weight of Decision-Making
Making choices about one’s life can often feel overwhelming and stressful. For many, the process of decision-making is anything but straightforward. While some individuals possess the innate ability to make swift decisions, others struggle and find themselves grappling with significant choices that could alter their life's course.
As an INFJ, I tend to take my time analyzing every facet of a decision before committing. I rarely seek counsel unless the choice affects others, in which case I definitely include those involved. In my Islamic belief, seeking sincere advice is encouraged; however, it is equally important that the person providing guidance does so with genuine intent.
Adding to this is my African cultural background, where community involvement resembles a close-knit family dynamic. Consequently, I typically consult only my immediate family during my decision-making process. Yet, due to my INFJ nature, it often appears more like I'm informing them of my decisions rather than soliciting advice. My family trusts that I have thoroughly considered the implications of my choices.
Now, let’s delve into the significance of providing individuals with the necessary space when they are faced with major life-altering decisions—whether they are friends, family, or colleagues. I’m not addressing children here, as this varies with parenting styles. However, I recall that during my childhood, I valued how my mother would make decisions on my behalf while ensuring to explain her reasoning and involve me in the process. This approach fostered my independence as an adult, enabling me to hone my decision-making skills from a young age.
One example of a substantial life decision that comes to mind is a close friend's choice to relocate to a different country.
Points to Remember:
- Respect Boundaries: Do not impose your opinions if someone hasn’t asked for your input. When you are eventually asked for advice, be concise and relevant. It's easy to get carried away when sharing your thoughts, but remember to be mindful of their situation.
- Be Proactive: It’s common for those close to you to expect updates on their decision-making process. Follow up with them, but be aware that they may feel uncomfortable asking for your guidance.
- Listen Actively: Sometimes, the best support you can offer is to simply be there to listen as they articulate their thoughts.
- Personal Choices: Each individual must navigate their own life choices; ultimately, they will bear the results, whether positive or negative.
Before concluding, I want to highlight a valuable tool I utilize when confronted with major decisions: Istikhara. This special prayer is performed after two units of prayer in Islamic tradition. To learn more about it, you can easily find information online.
