In the last decade, if you've been browsing the web, you may have come across the intriguing infographic below. Crafted by Yanko Tsvetkov, it humorously reflects European stereotypes, categorizing countries based on common perceptions. This infographic cleverly reimagines Europe into new, often amusing regions shaped by these cultural shortcuts.
This visual representation came to mind when I was uploading a bird sound recording I made earlier this year. Contrary to being a tranquil moment, the recording captured the chaotic scene just before dawn along the Baltic Sea, where a group of hooded crows clamored for scraps.
Section 1.1: The Crows of Europe
During my exploration of crow behavior, I discovered the fascinating territorial division between two closely related species: the hooded crow (Corvus cornix) and the carrion crow (Corvus corone).
Subsection 1.1.1: The Mystery of Their Distribution
These two species, nearly indistinguishable genetically, have carved out their territories across Europe. It is thought that historical glaciation events during the Pleistocene played a significant role in this separation. As the climate warmed, these isolated groups began to expand their ranges, leading to the current distribution we observe today.
Will these species ever come together again? Despite their genetic similarities, they maintain distinct territories. Occasionally, hybrids known as carrion-hooded crows emerge, typically when one parent exhibits a mutation that alters their appearance. For instance, a hooded crow with darker plumage may attract a carrion crow if they share the same habitat. However, individuals closely resembling their respective species show little interest in mingling with the other.
Interestingly, it has been established that hybrids often face more health challenges compared to their purebred counterparts. The carrion crow was recognized as a distinct species only in 2002, following studies that highlighted these health disparities.
