Embracing Digital Minimalism for a Clutter-Free Life

Chapter 1: Understanding Digital Minimalism
For the past several years, the idea of minimalism has captivated me. I find myself continuously eliminating anything that does not enhance my life. This journey has been influenced by figures like Marie Kondo—despite her recent changes in perspective—and Bea Johnson, who advocates for a zero-waste lifestyle. The core of this philosophy revolves around minimizing clutter in all forms, and recently, I have directed this effort towards my digital environment, which has long required a cleanup.
My aim with digital minimalism is to decrease the digital clutter I create and engage with, using technology in a way that enriches my life instead of detracting from it. This involves limiting unnecessary files on my devices, being selective about the content I consume, and ensuring that my use of technology aligns with my personal goals and values.
Adopting a digital minimalist approach can help anyone sidestep the pitfalls of an overly tech-focused life while harnessing the full potential of our devices.
Reducing Clutter
The principal goal of minimizing clutter is to ensure that you can easily locate what you need. Once you experience a more organized setup, it feels almost superhuman after enduring a chaotic digital space.
Finder Optimization
One significant step I took toward achieving a simpler digital life was streamlining Finder on my Mac.
Desktop Management
The first phase involved the desktop, where I discovered a straightforward yet powerful feature: stacks. By right-clicking on the desktop and selecting “Use Stacks,” all files of similar types are grouped into an expandable stack. My desktop often serves as a temporary repository for files I need to access soon. While I try to clear it out every couple of days to ensure that everything is in its proper folder, utilizing stacks allows me to quickly find what I need in the meantime.
Sidebar Adjustments
The main focus of my Finder cleanup was the sidebar. By opening Finder and using the shortcut “Command ,” I accessed Finder preferences. Under the General tab, I deselected all items shown on the desktop and set my preferred folder to open by default. In the Sidebar tab, I chose to display only Downloads and External Disks. I also added four frequently used folders for work, personal, and family matters to the Favorites section, ensuring that I could access any needed folder with just a couple of clicks.
App Drawer Organization
Another vital area to tidy on a Mac is the App Drawer. I enjoy using it for quick access to applications, but it can easily become cluttered. Here are some tips to maintain its cleanliness:
- Periodically scroll through your app drawer and remove applications you no longer use.
- Create an “Other” folder for stock Mac apps that you don’t utilize and cannot delete.
- Move all apps in your dock to the Other folder, as you can access them directly from your home screen.
My objective is to keep the contents of the app drawer limited to just one page, allowing me to quickly find my most frequently used apps.
Mindful Consumption of Content
A crucial aspect of digital minimalism is being aware of the content we consume online. Personally, I have found that my YouTube viewing can quickly spiral out of control due to its effective algorithm, making it all too easy to lose hours scrolling through suggested videos. To combat this, I've discovered a couple of helpful tools.
Safari Extensions
I regularly use a few extensions for Safari to streamline my browsing experience:
- 1Blocker: This application offers a variety of features, but I primarily use it to block annoying ads and pop-ups on web pages.
- BlockYT: I rely on this extension to restrict my YouTube browsing to only my subscriptions and library.
Initially, I was hesitant to set up an ad-blocker for my web browser. However, after trying it while testing the Arc browser, I found it hard to go back. Upon returning to Safari, the first thing I did was look for extensions to enhance my browsing experience.
Instapaper
Recently, I've started using Instapaper to save online articles and email newsletters I want to read later, which helps declutter my inbox. I appreciate its simplicity and convenience, though I haven't explored all its features yet. One of the best aspects is that you can gather the content you wish to read in a minimal, user-friendly interface.
Medium
I've been a fan of Medium since I discovered it nearly a year ago. The platform offers a wealth of tailored content without the distractions of ads, making it an appealing choice for focused reading.
Who Is in Control?
I believe everyone has their online vulnerabilities. For many, it's social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, which are designed to keep users engaged for as long as possible. To maintain a healthy work-life balance, I recently made an effort to delete numerous apps from my phone.
When I'm away from my computer, I aim to be fully present with those around me, whether they're family, friends, or even strangers. I realized that I don't need many apps on my phone, so why clutter it with unnecessary ones? By decluttering, I'm making a clear statement about who should be in control.
