# Strategies to Maintain Your Exercise Motivation

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to Staying Motivated

In a previous article, I discussed how scheduling races can help maintain running motivation. However, if competing in events isn’t appealing, there are alternative methods to remain committed to your fitness journey.

Section 1.1: The Power of Self-Deception

Having been a runner for over three decades, I genuinely enjoy the activity. Yet, there are countless days when my enthusiasm wanes. Whether it's inclement weather or the dreary, cold winters, the temptation to stay indoors is strong. I could easily retreat to bed or lounge in my cozy writing chair, but I seldom yield to that temptation.

How do I consistently push myself to step outside? I engage in a bit of self-deception. I convince myself that I’ll just go for a brief run or that I can turn back if I'm still feeling uninspired after a few minutes. Interestingly, I can hardly recall a time when I actually turned back. While I might adjust my planned distance occasionally, I almost always complete my run and feel invigorated for having done so. This is a rare instance where a little dishonesty can yield positive results, and it applies to all forms of physical activity. The same principle works when I’m reluctant to visit the gym or attend a fitness class—just take that initial step. I can always cut it short, though, in reality, I rarely do.

Section 1.2: The Importance of a Workout Buddy

Throughout my running journey, I’ve participated in various running groups and formed friendships at the gym. Knowing that someone is counting on me to show up significantly boosts my motivation. No one wants to let down their friends, even if they are just acquaintances from a running club or fitness class.

If you find your motivation dwindling, consider inviting a friend to join you. Participate in a group that meets regularly for your preferred activity. The social element of these gatherings serves as a powerful motivator to get moving. I once joined a large running group where I saw members only once a week. I eagerly anticipated our catch-up chats during our runs. Not only did this social interaction inspire me to lace up my shoes, but running with others made the long distances feel much easier, as I was too engaged in conversation to notice the time.

Chapter 2: Tracking Progress for Motivation

Section 2.1: Regular Weigh-Ins as a Motivational Tool

Most individuals exercise to maintain their fitness and manage their weight. Each person has their own ideal weight, which is tailored to their body type. Like many, I am aware of the weight range that suits me. For the past two decades, I have conducted weekly weigh-ins, which has helped me understand my acceptable weight range.

This routine provides a valuable feedback loop that keeps me motivated. Some weeks I might find myself at the upper end of my range (especially after holidays), while other weeks I’m right where I want to be. Tracking these numbers each week helps confirm my progress, or lack thereof, which serves as a significant motivator. If I know I'm on the edge of my range, I’m less likely to skip a workout. Conversely, when I’m within my ideal range, the satisfaction of maintaining my weight encourages me to keep going. Having data to back up my efforts is crucial for sustaining my motivation.

The Bottom Line

Even the most committed individuals encounter days when motivation to exercise is lacking. It’s easy to make excuses; therefore, it’s beneficial to have strategies that inspire you. Whether it's a little self-deception, accountability from friends, or solid data to guide you, these tools can help you stay on track.
