Embrace Your True Self: Overcoming Shame and Embracing Vulnerability
Written on
Chapter 1: The Weight of Shame
Fear of public shaming has significantly influenced my life, often causing me to shrink back out of anxiety over potential criticism. This struggle is something I delve into further in my podcast.
Teddy Roosevelt once delivered a powerful speech in Paris in 1910, shortly after his presidential campaign, with over 2,000 attendees. He emphasized the importance of effort in his quote from "Citizenship in a Republic" or "The Man in the Arena":
"It is not the critic who matters; not the individual who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer could have improved. The true credit goes to the person who is actually in the arena, whose face is marked by dust, sweat, and blood; who strives valiantly; who makes mistakes and falls short repeatedly, for there is no achievement without error and shortcoming; yet who genuinely endeavors to accomplish great deeds; who experiences deep enthusiasm and devotion; who dedicates himself to a worthy cause; who ultimately knows the triumph of high achievement, and who, even in failure, at least fails while daring greatly, ensuring that he does not belong to those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."
The audience's applause echoed for over two minutes.
Dr. Brené Brown reflects on this quote in the introduction of her book Daring Greatly, stating, "The first time I encountered this quote, I thought, This is vulnerability. My extensive research on vulnerability has consistently pointed to this essential truth. Being vulnerable does not equate to knowing victory or defeat; it involves recognizing the importance of both and engaging fully. So here we go:"
- Tune out the negativity.
- Dismiss the critics.
- Focus on your work.
- Pursue your passions.
- Cherish your loved ones.
- Navigate through your insecurities with resilience.
