This groundbreaking map, created by Chinese scientists, has a scale of 1:2.5 million, and it provides essential foundational data for lunar research. As reported by China Central Television, this new resource is a critical reference for the development of other celestial geological maps.
Key Features of the New Map
The lunar map encompasses various critical aspects of the Moon's geology, including its surface layers, structural composition, lithological data, chronological history, and a timeline detailing lunar volcanic activity and asteroid impacts.
"The research team has formulated and validated a novel geological timeline for the Moon, utilizing data from China's Chang'e lunar missions, along with insights from international lunar exploration initiatives. They achieved this through an extensive examination of the Moon's strata, morphology, composition, structure, and geological age," stated a spokesperson.

The map details an impressive array of geological features, including 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 types of rocks, and 14 distinct structural forms, all of which are indispensable for scientific inquiry, exploration strategies, and selecting landing sites on the Moon.
Availability and Collaboration
As noted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this study represents the most comprehensive analysis of lunar geology to date. The map has been produced collaboratively by scientists from the CAS Institute of Geochemistry and various research institutions and universities, leveraging data from the Chang'e project along with contributions from international research entities.
In addition to print formats, the map is also available digitally in both Chinese and English versions.
