Apple's Inexplicable Choices: Three Things We Can't Understand

Written on

Chapter 1: Apple's Quirky Decisions

Every year, I find myself investing a significant amount of money in new Apple devices, only to be met with disappointment that I mask with a forced grin.

“An Apple a day can turn you into a one-kidney person.”

— Sir Evil Geek

With a heavy heart and teary eyes, I must confess that Apple continues to make numerous odd choices each year, often without justification.

Here are three baffling decisions from Apple that remain unjustifiable:

Section 1.1: The Pricey Apple Pencil

Anything with the ‘Apple’ label tends to come with a hefty price tag, even a simple pencil. A standard wooden pencil at the store can be used freely for note-taking, doodling, or even making holes in certain materials. If it breaks, you only lose a few cents.

However, when a pencil costs over $100, you’d expect it to do more than just interact with an iPad screen. Unfortunately, the Apple Pencil merely tickles the display.

Using a Bluetooth connection—something we’ve had for two decades—Apple restricts its pencils to iPads only. In contrast, Samsung released the Galaxy Note with a built-in stylus back in 2011, showcasing a massive 5.5” screen for that time.

I fondly recall using a stylus with my iPhone 3GS, which had a mere 3.5” screen. Today, with iPhones reaching 6.7” and the Mini series at 5.4”, there's no logical reason why Apple hasn't made the Apple Pencil compatible with their iPhones.

While the Apple Pencils may not fit in a pocket due to their size, Apple could easily address this by creating smaller versions that attach to the back of iPhones or allowing users to choose how to carry them.

Section 1.2: The Elimination of 3D Touch

3D Touch was a groundbreaking feature introduced with the iPhone 6S series, having made its debut on the Apple Watch a year earlier. This innovative technology allowed users to apply pressure to the screen to access various functionalities, setting it apart from a simple long-press gesture.

However, some mischievous individuals exploited this feature for dubious purposes, leading Apple to remove it with the iPhone 11 series.

This decision has sparked speculation that Apple removed it for the same reason they eliminated adapters and earphones from their packaging—not for environmental concerns, but for profit motives.

Today, no Apple products utilize 3D Touch, which has disappeared from iPhones and Apple Watches alike. Meanwhile, iPads, which never had this capability, are now equipped with pressure-sensitive Apple Pencils, showcasing a reversal of roles.

Subsection 1.2.1: The Absence of iPad Apps

Despite the lessons learned, iPhones continue to act superior. A poignant incident unfolded when a 12.9” iPad Pro was out with its girlfriend, the Rose-Gold iPad Air. While shopping, they encountered two arrogant red iPhones that humiliated them with their apps.

The iPads were left dumbfounded as the iPhones flaunted their calculator and weather apps, while the iPads stood by without access to such basic functionalities.

Since the launch of the first iPad in 2010, essential apps like the weather and calculator have been conspicuously absent. Tim Cook even mentioned in 2020 that developers struggled to create these apps for the iPad format, a statement many found hard to believe given the plethora of third-party options available.

Ironically, iPads can display weather widgets, and calculations can be performed via spotlight search. So, why is it so difficult for Apple to produce a weather and calculator app?

Despite these quirks, my admiration for Apple endures, and I hope my future partner shares the same passion to avoid conflicts. This is the reality of being an Apple enthusiast—only those with insight can see the disappointment beneath our smiles.
