Place Linked to the Vin?a Culture

Alongside geophysical research, the German-Serbian team systematically surveyed the area surrounding the settlement for artifacts. Their discoveries suggest that this region was home to the Vin?a culture, which thrived from 5400 to 4400 BCE and is named after the site in Vin?a, on the outskirts of Belgrade.

This culture developed from the earlier Star?evo culture, giving rise to the Baden culture and other smaller cultural groups. Interestingly, it shares notable similarities with Japan's J?mon culture, despite the vast distances that separate them.

“An Early Community with a Settled Lifestyle”

Researchers noted that the artifacts found indicate significant influences from the local Banat culture. “This is noteworthy since few settlements with materials from the Banat culture are known in contemporary Serbia,” remarked Fynn Wilkes. “The inhabitants of this settlement were among the early communities to adopt a settled lifestyle, engaging in goat and cattle farming.”

“Southeastern Europe is crucial for understanding the dissemination of knowledge and technologies in early human history, as well as their relation to social inequalities. This region was where new metalworking technologies first emerged in Europe. The artifacts we've discovered provide valuable insights into social structures and the transfer of knowledge,” summarized Professor Martin Furholt.
