AirPods Pro II — Five Enhancements I'd Love to See
Written on
It appears that the long-awaited update for AirPods Pro is on the horizon, with rumors suggesting enhancements will arrive later this year. As someone who has enjoyed these earbuds for some time, I have a few specific upgrades in mind.
My Current Affection for AirPods
Interestingly, despite my professional audio background, I find myself quite fond of the AirPods Pro. While studio-grade headphones from brands like BeyerDynamic are my go-to for podcast editing and client work, I often reach for my AirPods Pro during daily activities. I upgraded to the Pro version in March after using the original AirPods for about two years.
When Apple introduced AirPods in September 2016, they were revolutionary. Their success led to the inevitable release of the Pro version, which brought significant enhancements such as Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) and Transparency Mode. Utilizing the H1 chip, these earbuds also support Spatial Audio and surround sound when paired with compatible iOS devices.
An Exciting Fall Ahead
With an Apple event scheduled for September 7th, there are numerous products on the horizon, including the iPhone 14, Apple Watch 8, and new Macs. Among these, I'm particularly intrigued by the smaller devices. While I may pass on the iPhone 14, I'm keen to explore the wearable market with the upcoming Apple Watch 8. I've also become a huge fan of the HomePod mini and would certainly consider a new HomePod if it’s released. However, the most enticing prospect for me is the potential update to the AirPods Pro, their first since 2019. Despite my admiration for them, there are areas I hope Apple will improve.
Let’s delve into my wish list for AirPods Pro enhancements and see if they resonate with you.
1. Enhanced Sound Quality and EQ Options
While the sound quality of the AirPods Pro is impressive, I believe there’s room for improvement. For instance, I’m currently enjoying the 'Closer To The Source' album by Leroy Hutson on Apple Music, and while the sound is generally good, I feel the treble could use a bit more brightness. A basic EQ adjustment feature in the settings would allow users to customize sound profiles to better suit individual tastes, rather than relying solely on the Adaptive EQ.
2. Improved Fit
One of the primary reasons I switched to AirPods Pro was for their ANC capabilities. The technology is remarkable, utilizing external and internal microphones to detect and counter unwanted noise. However, the fit remains a concern. My original AirPods were comfortable and stayed in place effortlessly, while the Pro version sometimes feels like it’s on the verge of falling out. If Apple could enhance the ear tips for a more secure fit, it would significantly improve the user experience.
3. Better Battery Information
While it's easy to check the battery level of the AirPods via the iPhone, there’s no straightforward way to monitor the earbuds' charge when they are in use. With iOS 16 allowing for battery percentage display in the menu bar, it would be beneficial to integrate similar functionality for the AirPods, especially since they are often used on the go.
4. Streamlined Auto-Connecting
Apple's auto-connect feature for AirPods is sometimes overly complex. While the intention is for the earbuds to seamlessly connect to devices linked to your Apple ID, it can lead to frustration. For example, while using my M2 MacBook Air, the audio often disconnects when I interact with another device. Simplifying this process would enhance user convenience.
5. Transition to USB-C Charging
With global demand for standardized charging solutions increasing, a shift to USB-C for AirPods Pro seems imminent. The EU has already enacted legislation, and other countries are likely to follow. While wireless charging is an option, having a USB-C connector would provide convenience and streamline charging.
Conclusion
So, there you have it—my five desired improvements for AirPods Pro II. If these updates do materialize, what are your thoughts on my suggestions? Are there any enhancements I may have overlooked? I’d love to hear your feedback!
Even in their current form, AirPods Pro are an essential part of my daily life. They offer convenience and quality sound at a reasonable price. With a few tweaks, they could be even better!
