You Are Pursuing the Wrong Goals, Hindering Your Progress

Understanding Goal Setting
When individuals embark on the journey of setting goals, it often stems from observing the aspirations of others, feeling motivated by their achievements, or being influenced by well-known figures discussing the significance of goal-setting.
However, this approach may seem counterintuitive, but it can actually hinder your ability to achieve what you desire in life.
When you emulate the goal-setting strategies of the majority, you're likely to experience a life that mirrors theirs. And this isn't merely about adhering to "S.M.A.R.T" goals, engaging in "visualizations," or having grand ambitions.
In this discussion, I will clarify the distinction between what I term "independent goals" and "relative goals," illustrating how the latter can significantly enhance your life.
Independent vs. Relative Goals
Most individuals tend to focus on independent goals, yet very few actually attain their envisioned dream life. Independent goals are defined by the ultimate outcome without considering your current situation.
To grasp this concept fully, it's essential to examine "relative goals." A relative goal seeks a proportional, incremental enhancement of your current state.
For instance, if you typically read for about 5 minutes daily and aspire to read for an hour each day, this might be your ultimate objective. However, attempting to make such a drastic leap could likely result in failure.
Why is that? Because this represents an improvement of an astounding 1200%!
When we align goals with your existing capabilities and skillset, we can make more informed decisions. Many people observe the habits of others and set independent goals, such as committing to read for 60 minutes daily, only to abandon the plan after a week or two.
Conversely, wise individuals assess their current status and set goals that target realistic, relative enhancements.
If you read for 5 minutes daily, aim to increase it to 7 minutes next week (a 40% rise). If you manage 20 minutes of focused work each morning, target 25 minutes next week (a 25% increase). If your daily caloric intake is around 2,500 calories and you wish to reduce it, try aiming for 2,250 calories next week (a 10% decrease).
By establishing relative goals, you're more likely to achieve them. Consistently reaching your goals over the years will ultimately lead to the life you've always dreamed of.
