Unlocking Your Writing Potential: Mindset and Identity Shift

Written on

Chapter 1: The Mindset Shift

Recently, I engaged with my subscribers at The Lemon Tree Mindset to uncover their biggest obstacles in writing. The responses stirred my emotions.

“I worry no one will care about my words.”

“I don't see myself as an authority on anything.”

“I hesitate to ask for payment for my work.”

“I struggle to maintain motivation.”

“I feel like a fraud.”

This brief glimpse illustrates the common struggles of writers. Most responses centered not on the craft itself, but on the mental barriers we face. These thoughts resonate deeply, as I've grappled with them myself. It's as if I were gazing into a reflective surface.

How often do we allow our inner critic to take center stage? Are you the one who is holding yourself back from achieving your aspirations?

Regardless of the number of workshops you attend or the resources you invest in becoming an "expert," the essence of good writing transcends these aspects. Mastery of writing techniques and marketing fundamentals is crucial, yet all of it becomes inconsequential without addressing your mindset first.

This is a harsh, yet vital truth. Your internal doubts can silence your voice. Insecurities can lead to cautious choices, while your fears can conjure the worst-case scenarios. A lack of self-assurance can dilute your message, and hesitation can be mirrored in your pricing.

So how can you transform your mindset?

By re-evaluating your thoughts and the language you use.

Section 1.1: Embracing Your Identity

If you don’t regard yourself as a writer, who will?

It's essential to eliminate self-deprecating language:

“I’m not really a writer.”

“It’s merely a hobby.”

“I’m not skilled enough.”

Instead, fully accept your identity and let it shape your actions. Your actions will, in turn, reinforce your identity.

You are what you do.

Say these four powerful words aloud: "I am a writer." Repeat them, and let them resonate.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Power of Vision

When clients express a lack of motivation, I always ask, “Why do you want to do this?” This question shifts the focus from motivation to a more profound vision.

For instance, I maintain a fitness routine six days a week. While motivation may wane, my commitment drives me forward.

Why do I do this?

  • I cherish being fit.
  • I crave the endorphins from exercise.
  • I aspire to be a positive example for my daughters.
  • I prioritize my health and wellness.

Vision can often overshadow a lack of motivation.

What is your "why"? Whether it’s the desire to turn your passion into a career or to publish a book, it must be significant to you.

Don't just seek motivation; commit to your vision.

Section 1.2: Recognizing Your Value

Rejection and critique are inevitable aspects of any journey, regardless of success.

In 2019, Taylor Swift disabled comments on her Instagram for this reason: “I’m training my brain to not seek validation from others,” she explained. “I think it’s healthy for your self-esteem to need less internet praise.”

If you’re having a tough day, check the reviews of any bestselling book on Amazon. No one is exempt from harsh criticism.

Your writing may not resonate with everyone, and that’s perfectly normal. Some of my notes receive hundreds of likes, while others barely make an impression.

My latest book, The Flight Home, received a two-star rating on Amazon, yet also won a literary award—an ironic twist that occurred in the same week.

Is my book exceptional, or is it dull? It could be both, depending on the reader.

Relying on external validation can lead to self-doubt. Your value is not determined by follower counts or likes; it stems from living in alignment with your identity and vision.

Your value is your triumph.

Lessons Learned:

  • Accept your identity: You are a writer.
  • Develop a strong vision that surpasses fleeting motivation.
  • Discover your value from within.
