Have you ever woken up one day feeling completely off? Tired, sluggish, and unmotivated? This can be frustrating, especially when just a short time ago you felt on top of the world—driven, energetic, and highly productive. Then, seemingly overnight, your enthusiasm fades.

Don’t fret, it's perfectly normal. We all go through these ups and downs; it's simply a part of life. Often, we feel above average half the time and below average the other half. The key is to recognize when you're spending too many consecutive days in a slump so you can take action to turn things around.

By developing the habit of awareness, you can gradually raise your baseline of feeling "good." What once felt like a “bad” day can, over time, become a “good” day in your journey.

I’ve experienced my fair share of ruts, and I’ve learned that getting out of them doesn’t require drastic measures. Instead, it’s about recommitting to five small, manageable habits, which I will outline here.

Here are five habits that can address 99% of your challenges:

  1. Define What Winning the Day Means

    Imagine playing a game for the first time. Your friend explains the rules, but if they forget to mention how to win, you're at a disadvantage.

    To play effectively, you must know how victory is achieved. Is it about scoring the most points, finishing quickly, or completing levels? If you’re unclear on how to win, even your best efforts may be futile.

    Unfortunately, many people navigate life without defining what "Winning the Day" looks like. This lack of clarity leads to a continual sense of losing because there’s always more that could be accomplished, resulting in a chronic state of discontent.

    To escape this cycle of dissatisfaction, dedicate ten minutes each morning to outline what Winning the Day means for you. Clearly identify your goals and how you want to achieve them.

    Pro tip: Make the game easy to win. Focus on generating positive momentum; even small victories can build excitement for the next day, creating a positive feedback loop.

  2. Wake Up When You Say You Will

    Success often hinges on maintaining momentum. Starting your day with a win can set a positive tone.

    The moment your alarm rings, you face a crucial decision: Will you honor your commitment to rise and shine, or will you hit snooze? It may seem trivial, but this choice reflects your self-discipline.

    Your self-esteem hinges on keeping promises to yourself. If you frequently break them, you undermine your confidence and lower your standards.

    Decide the night before when you will wake up, and stick to it. If you plan to wake at 9 a.m., get up then. If you choose to hit snooze, ensure you don’t slip into further delays that set a negative tone for the day.

  3. Tackle the Most Daunting Task First

    I confess, I’m a bit of a nerd. In my earlier life, I was a science fiction author, and I love how these stories revolve around heroes overcoming incredible challenges.

    In contrast, our daily to-do lists often consist of mundane tasks, making us feel like heroes in an uninspired story.

    However, we can make tasks feel epic by how we frame them. For instance, instead of saying, “I need to finish my report,” think of it as “I’m going to conquer my Daily Dragon today.”

    Your Daily Dragon represents the most important task that will propel you toward your goals. It’s never going to be easier than it is right now, so tackle it head-on.

  4. Get Plenty of Sunlight

    For most of human history, we've relied primarily on two light sources: the sun and fire. Sunlight significantly influences our mood and mental well-being by boosting serotonin production.

    However, our relationship with sunlight has been disrupted by artificial lighting, which can lead to issues like anxiety and sleep disorders.

    The solution is straightforward: Spend more time outdoors.

    Enhance this benefit by incorporating a simple walk into your routine. Research shows that walking in nature can dramatically improve emotional well-being and reduce stress.

  5. Review Your Daily Performance

    Knowing what Winning the Day looks like is just one piece of the puzzle. Reflecting on your daily performance is equally crucial. Without this review, you risk living on autopilot, repeating the same actions without assessing if they bring you closer to your goals.

    Consider living as a skill that can be refined through a Learning Loop:

    • Feedback: Recognize what works and what doesn’t.
    • Reflection: Analyze your actions and hypothesize improvements.
    • Iteration: Adjust your approach based on insights gained.

    To improve your life skills, take time each evening to evaluate your day. I find it helpful to use my values as a performance metric.
