Rediscovering the Joys of Working Abroad: A Personal Reflection
Written on
Chapter 1: A Journey to Remember
As I lie in bed, staring at the blank ceiling, I find myself reminiscing about my past adventures and the thrill that once filled my life. What made those times so exhilarating? What has shifted in my surroundings? Most importantly, what do I find lacking now? While we often hear that “the grass isn’t always greener,” I can’t help but feel that it was at one point. For several years, I experienced life and work in a foreign land, transitioning from the familiar culture of England to a vibrant, contrasting society. Here, I will delve into five aspects I long for from my time abroad, particularly in the UAE.
Section 1.1: Radiant Sunshine
“There is sun within every person.” – Rumi
Transitioning from the damp, chilly weather of England, where sunshine is a rare delight, to the warm embrace of the UAE was nothing short of spectacular. Unlike the gloomy months of September through March in England that often left me feeling down, I was invigorated by the endless sunshine in the UAE. Interestingly, I’m not typically one to bask in the sun; I preferred the shade, yet the sun seemed to beckon me to explore. It’s amusing to recall how I would often wear a cozy sweater to the cinema, where air conditioning was set to frigid levels!
Can you recall a place that instantly lifts your spirits?
Section 1.2: A Harmonious Work-Life Balance
“Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.” – Rumi
In the UAE, my perception of work was entirely different. Though my days were long and demanding—from 6 AM to 5 PM—work never felt burdensome. After a hard day's work, I could easily stroll into the sunset or enjoy the beach, which was merely a 20-minute drive away. There was no need to wait for the weekend to unwind by the shore!

Section 1.3: Meaningful Connections
“Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.” – Rumi
Working abroad introduced me to an incredible array of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The UAE is a melting pot, and it was impossible not to forge connections. While some friendships felt superficial, born out of shared circumstances, I was fortunate to establish lifelong bonds with some individuals, even after many years apart. Isn’t it thrilling to meet someone new, even if just for a short time?
Section 1.4: Adventures Await
“Travel brings power and love back into your life.” – Rumi
Living in the UAE offered ample opportunities for exploration. Its central location allowed for easy travel to neighboring countries, making weekend trips to experience different cultures a regular occurrence. Fellow expatriates frequently made plans to discover the rich traditions of various nations, and exploring the other emirates was equally encouraged to witness regional differences.
What adventures have you embarked upon in your current locale?
Section 1.5: Continuous Learning
“Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.” – Rumi
Being in a new society kept me in a perpetual state of learning. I enjoyed visiting museums to gain insights into the local heritage, geography, and customs. Interacting with the locals provided invaluable lessons about their traditions and way of life. The UAE, as a cultural melting pot, enriched my understanding of numerous cultures beyond just the local one.
