The Journey of Writing: Insights from 66 Days of Consistency

Chapter 1: Embracing the Habit of Writing
Research suggests it takes about 66 days to form a new habit. Having dedicated this time to writing on Medium, I can confidently say it has become a regular part of my life. As I write this on a Saturday—a day I promised myself would be laptop-free—I find myself compelled to create.
Initially, I hesitated to write yet another "writing about writing" article, but here I am, hoping to reach those who are either starting their journey on Medium or contemplating it. For those who choose to read on, I deeply appreciate your time.
I would also be grateful for any highlights, comments, or even a few claps on my work.
I. Planning is Essential
When I first ventured into writing on Medium, I lacked a clear strategy. I simply opened TextEdit and started typing, which made things unnecessarily challenging. However, once I began to outline my articles, everything became more manageable. Typically, I invest 30 to 60 minutes on research and outlining, allowing for a smoother writing experience without interruptions for facts or quotes.
II. The Power of the Pomodoro Technique
Many writers praise the Pomodoro Technique for a reason. This method involves working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break, repeating this cycle with longer breaks after a couple of hours. I find that this timer significantly enhances my focus and productivity. There are numerous free timers available; I personally use Toptal.
III. Allow Your First Draft to Flow Freely
In my early writing days, I had a habit of editing with every sentence. While I still do this to some extent, I’ve come to understand that first drafts are often rough. Instead of striving for perfection, aim to let your thoughts flow freely. You can always refine your work later.
IV. Editing Should Be Delayed
As mentioned, resist the temptation to edit while you write. Focus on getting your ideas down. Once you finish, step away for at least a day. When you return, you’ll view your initial draft with fresh eyes, making it easier to edit.
V. The Importance of Headlines
I’m still exploring how crucial headlines are. While I’ve analyzed many popular Medium articles and found their headlines lacking, these writers have established audiences that draw readers regardless. For new writers, however, a captivating headline is vital to attract attention. I invest time in crafting headlines that are engaging yet not overly sensationalist, utilizing tools like isitWP and MonsterInsights.
VI. Gaining Visibility Through Publications
Joining publications was a game-changer for me. I noticed an increase in readership once I started sharing my articles through platforms like Practice in Public. Publications not only broaden your audience but also provide valuable feedback.
VII. The Unpredictability of Success
I often find it challenging to predict which articles will resonate with readers. Some pieces I believe will perform well fall flat, while others I deem niche gain traction. This uncertainty is why I write about a variety of topics.
VIII. Rethinking Niches
Initially, I thought a niche was essential for success. However, I’ve encountered many successful writers on Medium who don’t confine themselves to specific topics. I committed to writing freely, focusing on honing my skills instead of limiting myself. As I approach 50 articles, I still haven't settled on a niche, and that's perfectly fine. The journey matters more than the destination.
IX. Writing on Medium is Not a Money-Making Venture
To date, I’ve earned only $1.94 from my writing on Medium after 66 days. Contrary to what some may suggest, Medium is not a guaranteed source of income. It may not evolve into a profitable side hustle for me, but I still cherish the joy that writing brings.
Final Thoughts
I’ve observed that many well-known writers are leaving Medium due to changes in the platform’s algorithms. I’m not well-versed in these developments, having joined the scene later. For me, Medium serves as a valuable creative outlet that I had previously overlooked. If you are new to writing, welcome to this fulfilling journey. May you find it as rewarding as I have.
