Investing in Yourself: A Bold Move for Your Future Success

Chapter 1: The Value of Self-Investment
Consider yourself as a business entity. To enhance your financial prospects, you must focus on developing your skills and knowledge. Generally, the more you commit to self-improvement, the greater the potential returns—provided these investments are wisely made.
As you evaluate whether it's time to invest in your personal development through a course, mentor, or professional guidance, here are three key indicators to consider:
- You feel stuck, disheartened, or at an impasse.
- You have a clear vision of your goals but lack the confidence to pursue them.
- You are confident in your goals but seek a faster route to achieve them.
Currently, my motivation for self-investment aligns with the third reason. Recently, I enrolled in Kristina God’s writing bootcamp to learn from someone whose journey mirrors the one I aspire to undertake.
Section 1.1: Ensuring Smart Investments
It’s crucial to make informed choices when investing in courses, training, or mentorship. It's all too easy to dive in recklessly and make extravagant purchases. Having personally spent nearly $100,000 on various training sessions, I understand the importance of being selective.
Here are three criteria I always consider before committing to an opportunity:
Do you trust the individual leading the program?
Conduct some research on the instructor. Understand their values and ensure they resonate with your own. I've encountered numerous courses led by overly sales-driven individuals, treating participants as mere statistics. Such instructors aren’t the ones I wish to learn from.
If you could only gain one insight, what would it be?
This serves as your benchmark for success. The aim of investing in yourself is to ensure the experience is beneficial. Focus on a single outcome you hope to achieve, as having too many expectations may lead to disappointment. For instance, my primary goal in Kristina's course was to learn how to become a top writer—an area I hadn’t previously explored but one where she excels.
Does the financial commitment align with your current situation?
Financial considerations often dictate our choices. Is it feasible for your budget? I recommend starting small to build momentum. Jumping into a $10,000 program without prior experience could backfire. However, if you've taken several courses in the $100–500 range without significant breakthroughs, it may be time to take a larger step. For example, Kristina’s course at $167 was a suitable investment for me as a new Medium writer, while my previous experiences led me to invest $11,000 in a mentorship program.
Section 1.2: Reflecting on Your Learning Experience
The aftermath of any educational pursuit is always interesting. After completing a program, it’s natural to evaluate the cost versus the benefits received. Personally, I believe that all learning experiences, even those that feel overpriced, hold value. Why? Because even from a disappointing experience, you can learn valuable lessons, whether about what to avoid in the future or how to realign your priorities.
Seeking out indirect lessons and byproducts from any experience can be incredibly enlightening. The real value may not always lie in the expected outcomes; hidden insights may emerge that are equally significant.
To summarize, consider these three questions before investing in yourself:
- Do you trust the person leading the program?
- If you could learn just one new thing, what would it be?
- Is the financial investment reasonable for your current situation?
Don’t hesitate to invest in yourself! This could be the pivotal step you need right now.
With warmth,
Megan
