How Indigo's Shift to Privatization Reflects Cybersecurity Challenges

Chapter 1: The Indigo Experience
If you're a Canadian resident, chances are you've purchased a book from Indigo, the country's prominent bookstore chain. Recently, the company has been under scrutiny following a significant cyber-attack that left their e-commerce services in disarray for an extended period. From a customer's viewpoint, this meant that I was unable to access the books I ordered for nearly two weeks. Some of my purchases vanished altogether due to the breach. While I wasn't billed for these orders, I also didn’t receive any items.
In a surprising turn of events, Indigo has decided to privatize, a move that raises questions about the future of their product offerings, such as their popular candles. Will prices rise? Will these candles even be available for purchase?

The governance and management strategies must ensure that various enterprise requirements are met and monitored. Strategic planning should encompass the methods for overseeing these provisions, providing a framework to confirm that the strategic plan is achieving its goals. This oversight is crucial for maintaining ongoing communication and reporting to stakeholders about compliance objectives, as outlined by ISACA.
However, I can't help but wonder if Indigo has effectively implemented these strategies, and I suspect many companies might not be doing so either.
Subsection 1.1.1: Understanding Change Resistance
In a recent article by PROSCI titled "Change Agents: Catalysts for Organizational Growth," Neely McHarris highlights a critical finding: "Thirty percent of organizational leaders have noted that resistance to change is a significant obstacle in successful change initiatives, regardless of the sector." Fortunately, influential leaders within organizations can serve as change agents, fostering essential transformations.
Organizations, whether public or private, face the challenge of navigating complex changes, such as adopting new technologies and adapting to market shifts. Individual employees must be willing to embrace and utilize these changes. PROSCI's research indicates that organizations with networks of change agents achieve project goals 50% of the time, compared to only 41% for those lacking such networks.
Section 1.2: The Reality of Cybersecurity
In practical terms, this underscores that cybersecurity encompasses more than just technology and information protection. The case of Indigo, along with numerous other companies, illustrates the genuine risk of job losses stemming from cyber-attacks. A significant part of this issue may arise from a lack of understanding and advocacy for cybersecurity among leadership teams.
Chapter 2: Solutions for Effective Change Management
To mitigate these risks, it is essential to design and implement tailored change management plans for leaders. These plans should focus on communication strategies and emphasize the importance of leadership sponsorship. Providing coaching support for leaders, as well as developing resistance management strategies for those who may not yet recognize the urgency of cybersecurity, is crucial.
Engaging all sponsors early in the process can significantly reduce the likelihood of a cyber-attack that could cripple the e-commerce platform.
As for me, I'm uncertain about purchasing my candles from Indigo. With the privatization slated for June 2024, I’m left wondering how this will affect me, the everyday customer.
