Scientific investigations ultimately exposed the hoax in 1953, revealing the fragments’ true identities: a 600-year-old human skull, a 500-year-old orangutan jaw, and a chimpanzee tooth.

In 1949, advancements in fossil dating established that the Piltdown find was no older than 50,000 years, dispelling the notion of it representing a pre-human species. Additional research in 2003 and 2016 uncovered that at least 38 specimens from Dawson's collection were forgeries.
