How to Embrace Big and Small Thinking Like Confucius

Chapter 1: The Essence of Small and Big Thinking
Thomas Merton once noted that “the greatest human temptation is to settle for too little.” True wisdom lies in recognizing our full potential while also appreciating the significance of small actions. The Stoic philosopher Zeno of Citium emphasized that “well-being is achieved gradually and is, in itself, no small feat.”
Is there anything in life that isn’t accomplished step by step?
Confucius, the renowned Chinese philosopher, articulated that “the wise man’s journey to virtue resembles a trek to a distant land or the climb of a lofty mountain. Travelers embarking on long journeys take their first step, and those scaling high peaks begin from the base.”
In his influential book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey encourages us to envision our goals clearly from the outset. Covey argues that all creations occur twice: first in thought and then in reality. This concept aligns with the principle of clarity emphasized by Seneca: “If you don’t know which port you’re sailing to, no wind will be favorable.”
To reach our goals, we must engage in expansive thinking (filled with imagination and creativity) to identify our destination. Simultaneously, we need to focus on the small, everyday actions necessary to achieve that goal.
Which aspect do you find more difficult: envisioning the big picture or managing the small details?
Understanding our inclinations helps us adjust our approach. The Buddha illustrated the significance of minor efforts with this metaphor: “Just as the steady drip of water fills a pot, a wise individual accumulates goodness bit by bit.” If you struggle with envisioning possibilities, keep in mind these words from Marcus Aurelius: “If you find something exceptionally challenging to achieve, don’t consider it impossible—what is possible for one can also be accomplished by you.”
Leo Tolstoy highlighted that one should pursue goodness without expecting immediate or visible results. Genuine goodness is cultivated over time through persistent effort.
What is the smallest action you can take today to move closer to the life you aspire to lead?
Reflect on your bigger dreams by taking time to ponder what truly matters. Mary Oliver poignantly asked, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Yet, don’t forget to take small steps daily; as a Chinese proverb reminds us, “Revitalize yourself completely each day; begin anew from scratch.”
