The region is known to have been home to some of Europe’s earliest farmers, associated with the Linear Pottery culture, which thrived around 5200–5000 BCE. Following them, the Precucuteni culture settlers arrived between 4700 and 4500 BCE.

A Polish-Romanian archaeological team recently discovered four ceramic figurines in the soil layers corresponding to the Precucuteni culture. One of these figurines, exceptionally well-preserved, depicts a woman with pronounced hips and a stylized upper body.
These brick-colored figurines were found alongside numerous fragments of ceramic vessels, allowing archaeologists to date them accurately. The vessels featured distinctive decorations, including various incised lines and stamped impressions, dating back approximately 6,700 years.

The purpose of these intriguing figurines remains uncertain. To date, around 100 have been discovered at Topoli?a, but none match the preservation quality of this latest find. Their meanings have sparked extensive debate within the archaeological community, often being linked to religious practices and deity representations.
Upon examining the remarkably preserved figurine using tomography, researchers discovered a surprising elongated object inside. The nature of this object—whether it is a bone or a clay cylinder—remains unknown.
As part of ongoing research, scientists plan to extract a sample to better understand the mysterious object and analyze the clay composition used for the figurine, alongside the firing techniques employed.
Archaeologists are scheduled to revisit the site in the summer, where geophysical surveys have highlighted several potential locations of former Precucuteni culture dwellings.
