Exploring the Silence of Blocked Emotions: Understanding Our Feelings

Chapter 1: The Foundation of Emotions
Emotions serve as our primary means of interpreting the world around us. From a young age, a child perceives a mother's smile and internalizes it as reassurance: “She’s happy with me. Everything’s okay. I’m loved and valued.” Emotions are essential for conveying the significance of our experiences and shape our existence. However, this is only possible when we allow ourselves to express them.
In my practice, I frequently encounter clients who struggle to articulate their feelings. When I pose questions like, “How do you feel? What emotions does this evoke for you?” they often draw a blank. This inability stems from a lifetime of suppressing their emotions, often as a result of negative reinforcement.
Many have faced criticism for being too expressive in their youth, while others were ridiculed during moments of distress. For some, their feelings were consistently dismissed, and others were taught that emotional detachment was the key to success. Ultimately, everyone seems to agree that displaying emotions equates to weakness, and nobody wants to be perceived as weak.
I, too, experienced this struggle. When I showed vulnerability by crying, my parents often reprimanded me further. Expressing sadness was met with disbelief, and loud laughter was stifled with comments about behaving appropriately. I learned to hide my joy—when I received a gift, my excitement was dampened by warnings about how others might judge me. My mother would respond to my tears with silence, deepening my feelings of isolation. When anger surfaced, my father’s reaction was physical punishment.
The fear of expressing emotions is compounded by deeply ingrained beliefs:
? If I allow myself to feel or show emotions, then…
I risk vulnerability, facing judgment, abandonment, and punishment from others…
In society, individuals who struggle to express their feelings are often viewed as cold or indifferent. Few understand that this demeanor often masks a deeper struggle for safety and emotional expression.
It is challenging to live in a self-imposed prison, yearning to express affection, love, anger, sadness, weakness, and fear—simply to exist as a person capable of feeling deeply.
