Essential Restaurant Etiquette: Top 5 DON’Ts to Avoid

Understanding Restaurant Etiquette
Before embarking on a career in the restaurant industry, I assumed that certain fundamental manners were universally understood. However, I quickly realized that many individuals engage in behaviors that can make others uncomfortable. Unfortunately, a significant number of these people are unaware of their faux pas.
Initially, I considered developing a comprehensive course on restaurant etiquette but opted to start with a straightforward blog post to gauge its reception. If you have experience working in a restaurant or bar, you will likely find some of these points relatable.
1. Neglecting to Tip
Complaints about tipping culture have become prevalent. While it’s true that in some areas, tips can reach absurd levels (for instance, certain venues in Las Vegas may suggest a default tip of 50%), it’s crucial to remember that restaurant staff rely on tips to supplement their income.
Keep in mind that restaurants typically operate on narrow profit margins. If establishments were to increase wages to match what tips usually cover, the cost of your meal would significantly rise—in some cases, a $20 burger could escalate to $35 or more. The tipping system allows you to influence your server’s earnings directly.
When you don’t tip, you’re not just impacting the server; they often share tips with other staff based on their sales, not their tips. Therefore, your choice to tip directly affects their overall income, which is something to consider each time you dine out.
2. Snapping Your Fingers
One of the most effective ways to irritate your server or bartender is by snapping your fingers to get their attention. They are already aware of your presence and aim to provide the best service possible, motivated by the tipping system. Snapping disrupts their flow, often leading to mistakes with your order and those of others.
Instead, try to establish eye contact. This way, they can assess if you need anything—whether it’s a drink refill, placing an order, or settling the bill. Always consider how you would feel if someone snapped their fingers at you while you were working.
3. Not Honoring Reservations
Failing to show up for a reservation can be detrimental to a restaurant’s operations. Due to frequent no-shows, many establishments now require deposits or credit card information to secure a reservation. Your absence results in vacant tables, which can significantly affect the restaurant's financial performance, particularly given their slim margins.
If you are unable to fulfill your reservation, it’s courteous to inform the restaurant at least 24 hours in advance. Ideally, only make a reservation if you are certain you can attend.
4. Arriving Late
Being late for a reservation is frustrating for both the restaurant and fellow diners. Each reservation is strategically spaced to ensure timely service. Arriving late not only compromises your own experience but also delays the dining experience for subsequent guests.
If you find yourself caught in traffic or facing delays beyond your control, simply call the restaurant to provide an updated arrival time. This consideration helps the staff manage their schedule effectively.
5. Excessive Use of Flash Photography
Capturing beautiful photos of your food or the restaurant ambiance is common, but issues arise when you take numerous pictures with a flash. Remember that other patrons are enjoying their meals too—some may be on a romantic date or simply trying to relax. Flash photography can disrupt their experience.
As a guideline, limit flash usage to two shots: one for the first picture and another in case you need a redo. Beyond that, it becomes disruptive to both staff and guests.
Conclusion
The essence of restaurant etiquette lies in empathy. Consider how you would feel if someone failed to tip you, no-showed for a reservation, or disrupted your dining experience with excessive photography. At its core, etiquette is about being mindful of others and fostering a pleasant environment for everyone.
