Essential Insights for Aspiring Medium Writers

Chapter 1: Key Lessons from My Writing Journey
This is my third attempt at writing on Medium, and I’ve stumbled significantly in my previous efforts. It wasn’t due to a lack of writing ability or talent, but rather my failure to adopt the right mindset. Understanding what separates dreamers from true writers is crucial.
Writing is Not Always Bliss
While there are moments when words flow effortlessly, those instances are rare. The reality of writing often involves self-doubt, frustration, and inner turmoil. Many will tell you that writing should feel enjoyable, but that’s misleading. In truth, writing can be quite tough. When I began my writing journey, I naïvely thought that simply sitting down would result in a stream of words. I soon discovered how challenging it could be, leading me to give up prematurely—not because I lacked potential, but because I didn’t yet possess a writer’s mindset.
Writing is meant to be challenging; it tests your beliefs and exposes your vulnerabilities. This vulnerability can be seen in personal narratives, like my experiences with body image or the struggles of moving back in with my parents.
Writing Daily is a Requirement
Daily writing is not merely a suggestion—it’s a necessity. There’s an abundance of romanticized advice suggesting you should write only when inspired. While it’s understandable that many wish to write for enjoyment, expecting to make a living while doing so is unrealistic. It took me years to realize this truth. Initially, I thought I could write sporadically and still earn money, but that was a misconception.
To achieve financial success through writing, you must commit to writing consistently. You need to cultivate a habit of writing every day, even if much of what you produce isn’t your best work. Quantity paves the way for quality; the more you write, the better you become. It’s that straightforward. Commit to writing daily and then continue on this path.
Engagement is Equally Important
Building a habit of writing and publishing regularly is a fantastic start, but it’s only part of the equation. Medium is a community for writers, and engagement plays a pivotal role in success. When I first joined, I mistakenly believed that readers would eagerly line up to absorb my work. The reality is quite different: at the beginning, most people won’t be interested. This isn’t their fault—they simply don’t know you yet.
To succeed, you must actively promote your work and, more importantly, engage with other writers. This interaction fosters connections, allows you to share insights, and helps you build a supportive community around your writing. That’s what truly enhances your experience on Medium.
Reflecting on my early days on Medium, I realize that I made many missteps. Here are three key lessons I wish I had known:
- Writing is not a romantic endeavor.
- Daily writing is essential.
- Engaging with others is just as important as publishing stories.
