Embracing Reason During the Solstice: A Call for Reflection

Chapter 1: The Significance of the Solstice
Greetings on this shortest day of the year! Today marks the moment when the northern hemisphere is tilted farthest from the sun, leading us into the gradual return of longer days filled with light. Yet, as we welcome this brightness, one must ponder: will it lead to any real enlightenment?
I doubt it.
After discussing plans with my family, I have chosen to skip visiting them this Christmas. The response from half of them has been accepting, while the other half hopes for some middle ground, perhaps pushing these traditions to June. Regardless of the outcome, my decision stands firm. I believe it is my responsibility to prioritize the well-being of my fellow citizens who value rationality and science. I am exercising my right to make informed choices regarding my health by opting not to gather with those who continue to disregard sound judgment.
Their convictions are misguided.
I refuse to placate their sentiments.
Whether they are fervent believers or nostalgic for hazardous customs, my stance is clear: I will not partake this year. Once again.
It’s time for those of us who advocate for reason and scientific understanding to take a stand. Let’s stay home and connect via Zoom once more. Faith alone could lead to dire consequences. Adhering to outdated practices can also be perilous.
Tomorrow promises to be brighter, and we can assert this with confidence, thanks to scientific inquiry. Our understanding of the world assures us that the lengthening days begin at this very time each year.
While the President assures us that it’s safe to gather with vaccinated loved ones, I know that some of my family members are not vaccinated. Therefore, I will not be visiting them this year. The responsibility lies with them, not me.
Navigating these decisions can be challenging, especially when faced with societal pressure and guilt from those around us.
Such is life.
We must learn to cope.
For once, I urge my fellow Americans to practice restraint.
Your children will only remember the consequences if you contract Covid and suffer the ultimate fate. They won’t hold onto memories of this season if you’re no longer around next year. Your kids need to remember that you made choices that protected them, even if it came at an emotional cost. Instead of succumbing to outdated traditions just to “reunite” during a pandemic, prioritize their safety.
Your children may wonder why Santa can’t resolve this situation, but at least you’ll be there to comfort them. What good would it do if either of you ends up in a casket? All for what? The fleeting excitement of unwrapped gifts and cookies at grandma's house?
We have the opportunity to celebrate at any time!
Staying indoors with relatives from various locations during a pandemic is not a wise decision.
Covid does not discriminate.
It disregards what Santa, Jesus, or even grandma may think about it.
The responsibility is yours now.
Make your choices carefully.
This is how we endure.
It’s the only way for those of us who prioritize reason over reckless sentimentality.
