Born on March 7, 1971, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Todd Kohlhepp's childhood took a drastic turn when his parents divorced at the age of three. He moved to South Carolina with his mother, who gained full custody, remarried, and sought a fresh start.
Kohlhepp's youth was marked by troubling behavior. He often displayed aggression towards peers and found pleasure in damaging their belongings. Notably, he stabbed a girl in the leg over a disagreement and exhibited signs of animal cruelty, including shooting the family dog and poisoning their goldfish.
At the age of nine, he began therapy to manage his escalating anger issues, which had made social interactions increasingly difficult. During this period, he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Georgia for three and a half months.
In 1983, when he was twelve, Kohlhepp moved to Arizona to live with his biological father, a change he anticipated positively. His relationship with his stepfather had been strained. In Arizona, he found work and developed an interest in collecting weapons, spurred on by his father's similar hobby, which included teaching him about explosives.
However, this relationship soured as his father spent more time away with new girlfriends, leaving Kohlhepp isolated. Yearning to return to his mother, he was consistently met with excuses for why this could not happen.
Tragedy struck just three years later when Kohlhepp, at fifteen, kidnapped a 14-year-old girl on November 25, 1986. Armed with a .22 caliber revolver, he forced her to his home, bound her, and assaulted her. He later threatened her life and her siblings if she spoke out. Undeterred, she reported the incident, leading to Kohlhepp's arrest for kidnapping and sexual assault. In 1987, he pleaded guilty and received a fifteen-year sentence while being registered a
