If you've never encountered the term "Solutions Engineering," you're certainly not alone. I first stumbled upon it in 2017 after shifting my career focus to Computer Science, and I quickly became fascinated by this field. In this article, I will outline what Solutions Engineering entails, key terminology, essential skills, recommended books, and the challenges and opportunities that come with one of the most exciting careers in the tech industry—though it remains relatively unknown.

Terminology in the Field

In the industry, the role of Solutions Engineer is known by various titles, including Pre-Sales, Technical Sales, Sales Engineering, Solution Architect, and more. While these titles may differ from company to company, they essentially refer to the same function.

At its core, this profession involves supporting the Sales team—like Account Executives—by showcasing your company's offerings to clients. Often, these sales professionals may lack in-depth technical knowledge about the products they are selling, which is where the Solutions Engineer plays a pivotal role.

A Solutions Engineer:

  • Grasps the company's product offerings and, during client discussions, identifies how these can address the customer's technological challenges.
  • Offers honest advice, bridging the gap between business needs and technical implementation.
  • Tackles not just technical but also financial and operational issues faced by clients (for instance, how to automate a department's tasks to reduce maintenance costs by a certain percentage, leading to significant savings).
  • Establishes a trusting relationship with clients, as Account Executives can sometimes be perceived as solely focused on meeting sales targets.

As a Solutions Engineer (or under any of the alternative titles), my primary goal is to ensure that the solution I propose will effectively meet the client's objectives and challenges, even though I also have quotas to fulfill.

We act as trusted advisors. We have a comprehensive understanding of our products and the various technologies in the industry, as well as the operational challenges clients face.

We analyze the data provided by clients and develop tailored solutions. We are often referred to as Solutions Architects.

One of my favorite aspects of this role is educating our Account Executives. Being a source of knowledge, recognizing our limits, and knowing where to find information are crucial skills for a Solutions Engineer.

Skills Required for Success

Here are some essential skills that contribute to being an effective Solutions Engineer:

Soft Skills

  • Active Listening: It's vital to listen carefully to the client's concerns. I make it a point to take notes and paraphrase their words back to ensure comprehension and show that I value their input.
  • Storytelling: When I engage with clients, I find it helpful to share stories—whether about our product or other clients who have successfully implemented similar solutions. This not only makes clients feel connected but also builds trust in my expertise.
  • Sales & Negotiation: A key skill for any Solutions Engineer is the ability to sell and negotiate. Understanding company policies and product offerings is essential, as is employing strategies to effectively communicate with clients and close deals.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Developing effective communication is crucial, whether in virtual or face-to-face interactions. Knowing how to engage clients, clarify points, and read the room are vital skills for anyone in technical sales or technology roles.

Technical Skills

The technical expertise required for a Solutions Engineer can differ widely. If you're interested in pursuing a career in this field, I recommend identifying companies of interest and reviewing job postings to understand the skills they seek.

Some commonly requested technical skills include:

  • Programming & Computing: Many SaaS companies require knowledge of various programming languages. For example, Salesforce may demand different skills than MongoDB or Google Cloud Platform.
  • IT Infrastructure: Familiarity with concepts related to public cloud services, such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and AWS, is often required, including data center knowledge, databases, and backup systems.
