The design of the Apple Watch Ultra warrants a dedicated discussion. At first glance, it diverges significantly from what one typically expects from an Apple product. Its angular edges and sleek profile evoke imagery from sci-fi films, making it appear both large and imposing. The 49 mm size may be off-putting for many, as it is larger than what most people might choose to wear.

However, Apple has crafted this watch for a specific audience—those who seek out extreme experiences, which is a limited demographic. The Apple Watch Ultra's unique aesthetic and robust build are not designed for the mass market. It targets individuals who previously opted out of Apple Watches due to their fragility during activities like hiking or diving.

This model shifts away from being a fashion accessory and is positioned instead as a rugged companion for sports and fitness enthusiasts. Apple's marketing campaigns highlight extreme scenarios, emphasizing the watch's practicality in challenging environments.

Functionality

The Apple Watch Ultra is a smartwatch that embodies a "can-do" spirit. Its true strength lies in its extensive array of features tailored for active users. Whether diving, hiking, or training for triathlons, this watch meets the needs of those who prioritize rigorous physical activity. It’s not aimed at casual fitness enthusiasts or those who engage in trendy workouts; rather, it caters to individuals who integrate fitness into their daily lives seamlessly.

Every aspect of the Apple Watch Ultra—from its recessed flat screen to its superior materials and features like a temperature sensor and impressive battery life—has been designed with the active user in mind. These specifications likely don’t apply to everyone, including myself. While I enjoy the occasional hike, my walks often lead me to the LEGO store.

While this watch may not be for me, I find one feature particularly appealing—the extended battery life. My Series 7 typically lasts around 2.5 days on a single charge, but the Apple Watch Ultra could potentially double that with my usage habits. Coming from a Garmin that offered ten days of battery life, even a modest improvement would be a welcome change.

Pricing Insights

While calling the Apple Watch Ultra "cheap" might be a stretch, its price point is competitive. In the U.S., it retails for $799, though taxes can significantly raise that figure—often pushing the final cost closer to $870 depending on your location.

On the other hand, in countries like Ireland, the price is set at 999 Euros, which aligns with my expectations. When compared to similar high-end smartwatches from brands like Garmin, the Apple Watch Ultra presents a more economical option. For instance, the Garmin Enduro 2 starts at 1099, and if you want diving capabilities, you'll need to invest in a separate model, which can also be pricey. The Apple Watch Ultra combines multiple functionalities in one device for a reasonable price.

Desire for the Ultra

Deep down, many of us are intrigued by the Apple Watch Ultra. The tech enthusiast in me is drawn to its impressive array of features. For the average consumer, the appeal lies in the convenience of extended battery life, reminiscent of simpler times with Casio watches that required minimal upkeep.

Moreover, for those who lead active lifestyles—like my friend Stephen, who engages in various outdoor activities—the Apple Watch Ultra offers unparalleled utility and seamlessly integrates into the Apple ecosystem he enjoys.

Ultimately, the Apple Watch Ultra is a niche product designed for a specific user base that demands durability. For those individuals, the decision is straightforward. For the rest of us, the Series 8 remains a suitable alternative.
