The Apple MacBook Pro 16" M2 Pro: A Detailed Evaluation

In October 2021, Apple launched a new series of MacBook Pros featuring 14-inch and 16-inch models, marking a significant upgrade. Fast forward two years, and Apple has revealed an enhanced lineup, now equipped with the M2 processor. This article will focus on the 16" model, which I highly recommend.

Package Contents

Upon opening the substantial and well-padded box, you will find the MacBook itself, a 140W power adapter (the only one available for the 16" M2 Pro), and a 2-meter USB-C/MagSafe 3 charging cable.

The cable connects directly to the adapter and features a braided design that has become popular recently, making it more durable despite being prone to collecting dirt. Additionally, the package includes essential documentation and Apple stickers.

With this setup, you can opt for a MacBook with the M2 Max processor, enabling connectivity for up to two external displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz through Thunderbolt, or one 8K display at 60Hz, or one 4K display at 240Hz via HDMI. Other ports include a MagSafe connector, HDMI 2.0, and an SDXC card reader.

Software and Connectivity

The MacBook was delivered with macOS 13 Ventura, providing a responsive and familiar experience for existing MacBook users. For wireless connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3, and features three Thunderbolt 4 ports for data transfer, charging, and external monitor connections.

Design

Apple has maintained its traditional design elements for the MacBook Pro line, with no significant changes in color options. You can still choose between silver and gray, lacking the vibrant colors found in the MacBook Air (M2) series. The dimensions measure 16.2 inches diagonally, with approximate dimensions of 35.6 × 24.8 × 1.7 cm.

The weight has slightly increased from 2.1 kg to 2.15 kg, making it less portable for daily carry compared to the lighter 14" model, which weighs around 1.6 kg. The design features rounded corners with sharp edges, which may affect typing comfort.

The display retains a noticeable cutout that does not include Face ID, a missed opportunity. The keyboard features a low stroke but offers excellent typing feedback, complemented by the expansive Force Touch touchpad, which is among the best in its class.

The Touch Bar has been eliminated in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, which many users may find acceptable due to its limited practicality. The only remnant is a large Touch ID button that also serves to lock the screen.

On the left side, you'll find a 3rd generation MagSafe connector, two Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The right side features HDMI, a third Thunderbolt 4 port, and an SDXC card slot. While a fourth USB-C or USB-A port is missing, the overall selection is adequate by Apple's standards.

The build quality of the MacBook Pro M2 is exceptional, with no squeaks or flexing, and the aluminum chassis feels robust.

Sound Quality

The audio output on MacBooks has consistently been impressive, and the 2023 MacBook Pro 16" is no exception. It boasts six speakers arranged to minimize resonance and supports Dolby Atmos. The speaker outputs are located on either side of the keyboard, delivering loud and high-quality sound without distortion, even at maximum volume. HDMI also supports multi-channel audio output.

Display Features

Apple has kept the display unchanged, which is expected given its superior quality. The MacBook Pro 16" features a 16.2" Liquid Retina XDR display (mini-LED) with a resolution of 3,456 x 2,234 pixels (254 PPI). It offers sustained brightness of up to 1,000 nits and peak brightness reaching 1,600 nits.

The contrast ratio stands at 1,000,000:1, and it incorporates True Tone technology. ProMotion support allows for an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The display cutout houses a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, sufficient for video calls.

Battery Life

The efficiency of Apple's custom processor significantly contributes to battery longevity. According to Apple, the MacBook Pro 16 can provide up to 22 hours of video playback or 15 hours of web browsing. In practice, users can expect even better results, often going two full workdays without needing a charger.

Charging is facilitated by a 140W adapter, and the Lithium Polymer battery has a capacity of 100 Wh. Fast charging capabilities allow for 50% charge in just 30 minutes and a full charge in approximately 82 minutes.

Hardware Performance

This generation of MacBooks is exclusively powered by Apple Silicon, with options for either the M2 Pro or the M2 Max in the 16-inch model. The M2 Pro comes standard with a 12-core CPU and a 19-core GPU, along with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.

However, it's worth noting that the SSD performance is slightly slower than the previous generation, using a single 512GB SSD rather than a dual 256GB setup. The tested model features a 1TB storage configuration and 32GB of unified memory with an M2 Pro processor.

In total, the MacBook Pro 16" can cost around $6,499.00. The configuration I tested is ideal for developers, but for those needing enhanced graphics performance, upgrading to the M2 Max is an option. The tested configuration is priced at $3,099.00.

While the price may seem steep, Apple's performance benchmarks and drive speeds provide justification. Users will find the MacBook operates quietly, even during intensive tasks, and remains cool under pressure.

Heat levels increase during video editing or high-resolution photo processing, but the fans rarely engage. The latest MacBook Pro 16 shows an abundance of power for demanding tasks.

Compared to Intel-based MacBooks, this model is a notable improvement, effortlessly handling tasks without breaking a sweat. Users focused on video editing will particularly benefit from the M2 Max's capabilities and its silent operation.

Final Thoughts

The Apple MacBook Pro 16" M2 Pro is a powerhouse that leaves no room for compromise. Priced at $3,099.00, it is perfectly suited for a variety of demanding tasks.

In scenarios involving video editing or graphics work, the high-quality touchpad and spacious keyboard—offering excellent feedback—are significant advantages.

For anyone in search of a high-performance device that can transition seamlessly between office and home environments, this model comes highly recommended.
